That's right, a herd of panicked elk were cornered in a cow pasture and a group of boneheads decided to "hunt" them. Even other hunters were disgusted: "How can you call that hunting?" There are some fair chase rules that any ethical hunter subscribes to.". asked Bob Coombs, 70, of Mount Vernon. That can't be called hunting.

I can hear the mooing of cows, interrupted by gunshots, while two scared flocks of ducks fly above the delta. The cows, let free to walk to the nearest wet meadows, are coming in my direction. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. Giving a few hundred hunters something else to shoot, in my opinion, cannot be worth the blowback from tens of thousands of people who are willing to travel and spend just to watch the birds fly over. Isn’t that neat?

At first, the road is paved, but as soon as the tarmac ends, the tracks become decorated by hunters in orange vests. The soil is disturbed by foraging boars (and there is not a single shot from those hunters). Cows and water buffaloes grazing the dried up lakebed under the imposing shadow of Mt. It’s the boar hunting season.

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? Do all hunters realize that?
