Since I have limited experience with eastern Mexico, and even less experience with tropical species, I enthusiastically accepted. By week’s end I had 30 new species on my life list. And the final species, seen in the neighborhood in which I was housed, gave me my 500th species in Mexico. Good choice!

THE QUEST FOR THE RAREST OWL OF INDIA

This species was discovered (shot, actually) in the 19th century, only to be lost through the entire 20th century. A tin yellow tiger is staring at us from the Melghat Tiger Reserve gates, as the narrow tarmac road winds through teak forest ( Tectona grandis ) along the hillside. I have a quick cup of black tea and off we go.
