I am accustomed to seeing a Coyote or two on each visit I make to the park in the early morning before bikers, dog-walkers, joggers, and humanity in general get out and about. But the experience I had this morning put my previous sightings in the shade. But the Coyote count didn’t stop at three. ………

Much like Carrie’s recent experiences being hoodwinked by non-bird sources of birdy-sounding calls , I’ve had my share of animal encounters out in the field. We’ve got coyotes in Chicago and its suburbs, but I’ve never bumped into one in the field. Through the windows of our van, but good looks nevertheless.).

The lagoon outside offered other experiences too. Golden Gate Park was next and it delivered with a family of Great Horned Owls , nesting Cooper’s Hawks and Red-shouldered Hawks , coyotes, an annual American Bittern , Belted Kingfishers , Brown Creepers , and a host of small songbirds that I’m still getting to know.

One of the wonderful experiences when birding away from your home turf is the potential to come across creatures other than birds with which you may not be familiar. Well, they were foraging in the grass when they weren’t running out in the road, which is an unfortunate habit that they have.

Horned Screamer Michael McDonald is a lot like Wile E Coyote and would like to see a Rufous-vented Ground-cuckoo ! They really appeared to enjoy this, because as soon as they swam back to the rocks they would line up again to repeat the experience. My most-desired Brazilian bird? It seemed like a really fun way to spend the day!

Coyote as it stayed just out of acceptable camera-range in Irvine Regional Park. If you’ve blogged about your weekend experience, you should include a link in your comment. But his favorite, and therefore Best Bird of the Weekend, was a Greater Roadrunner which decided to pretend Corey was Wile E. How about you?

We also saw Prairie Dogs , Bison , Mule Deer , Abert’s Squirrel and Coyote. We stopped at Rosie’s Diner. Honest food in a fifties’ diner while reminiscing about all those movies you have seen about diners in the fifties. I can recommend it. I ticked off 9 lifers. All bird and animal pictures are Brad’s.
