Update October 2024 – Brazil’s Environment and Sustainable Development Committee approved a bill to stop the killing of male chicks. Introduced by Congresswoman Luciene Cavalcante at Animal Equality’s request, the bill proposes using in-ovo sexing technology, which could save 84 million chicks each year.

I received an e-mail from the well-meaning Wendy at Compassion in World Farming (which I find an odd combination of words) regarding Egypt's pig cull and asking me to send my protest to the Egyptian Government. CIWF wants to "halt the brutal killing of these animals, and to ensure that they can be assured of a humane future."

As you know, a lot of birds are killed in the U.S. If so, the frequency of road kill should decline over time.

After all, what good is getting a kill if in doing the killing the predator is injured? Peregrine Falcons are excellent at culling the weak. Of course, injured animals have a very difficult time making it in the wild. This is why predators are generally unwilling to attack anything that has a chance at all.

He has volunteered to kill a deer cruelly, ineptly and with an outdated weapon that causes additional suffering to the deer. I can’t even imagine being in a position where my government was telling me to kill my dog, or have it beaten to death. Dog owners in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, are even being told to kill their own dogs, or else their dogs will be beaten to death by the police and the owners will be charged a fine.

He clearly thinks that it is wrong to cause animals to suffer unnecessarily, but he appears to be somewhat ambivalent about killing animals (provided the killing is carried out humanely). However, the above rationalization does not directly address the issue of contributing to the unnecessary killing of a conscious sentient being.
