It is listed as Near Threatened, partly due to the usual occurrence of illegal trade for the pet market. As usual when species are well-examined, the number of subspecies seems to multiply, though apparently some of these subspecies have recently been culled in order to simplify the life of birders.

The targeted rabbits are the unwanted inhabitants of capital Stockholm's parks, which are culled to protect the shrubs and trees which they gorge on. Many of them are domestic pets released by uncaring owners which then go on to breed. In Sweden, the way they deal with rabbit problems is to shoot them and burn them for fuel.

They are a commensal species, meaning that they are a wild animal that lives in close association with humans, not as a pet or as a farm animal but more like a parasite, to the extent that it is hard to find them in truely wild settings, and it is hard to find human settlements without them.
