I recently took a walk off-trail at Papscanee Island in Rensselaer County, New York, taking advantage of deer trails to find my way through the thick brush. Good luck, egg! I was startled by an American Robin flushing from directly in front of me, not more than three feet away.

When there are cuckoos around – which parasitize Daurian Redstarts – the females have a higher rate of egg rejection. The Grey Nightjar is not really affected by real estate prices (always an important topic in China) as it does not build a nest – the eggs are simply laid on leaf litter or bare ground.

People also say that hyraxes are elephants, but they are so distant in their relationship that it is little different than saying that deer are a type of pronghorn antelope. One of the most interesting differences between birds and dinosaurs has to do with their eggs. The nature, distribution, and evolution of bird song is unclear.

This happened to me recently on a birding trip, with somewhat egg-on-the-face results. The analysis of Python stomach contents indicates that they eat mammals, as small as mice, and as large as a fully grown deer. Some of these snakes had evidence of birds in their stomachs and some were gravid with up 55 eggs nearly ready to be laid. Rock Python. Photo Credits: Samuel Wright.

Speaking of pregnant snakes, do sea snakes lay their eggs ashore like sea turtles or do they keep them internally until the young are ready to hatch/ be born, like some sharks? These do lay eggs on land and are (reasonably) mobile once they hit the beach. It seems like there is great diversity in this continent. Wicked, right?

I haven’t just seen birds, but the most amazing butterflies, red squirrels, chipmunks and even a deer… all surviving in forests so close to so many people. The mystery of an egg with no markings The big mystery is that one of our pairs of Pied Oystercatchers has laid a white egg… anyone heard of our seen that before????
