I recently took a walk off-trail at Papscanee Island in Rensselaer County, New York, taking advantage of deer trails to find my way through the thick brush. Good luck, egg! I was startled by an American Robin flushing from directly in front of me, not more than three feet away.
When there are cuckoos around – which parasitize Daurian Redstarts – the females have a higher rate of egg rejection. The Grey Nightjar is not really affected by real estate prices (always an important topic in China) as it does not build a nest – the eggs are simply laid on leaf litter or bare ground.
People also say that hyraxes are elephants, but they are so distant in their relationship that it is little different than saying that deer are a type of pronghorn antelope. One of the most interesting differences between birds and dinosaurs has to do with their eggs. The nature, distribution, and evolution of bird song is unclear.
This happened to me recently on a birding trip, with somewhat egg-on-the-face results. Go win a copy and you might get it before I get off my keister and write my review… Great Horned Owl Taking a Deer Leg Seriously, that really happens in this excellent video of a Great Horned Owl scavenging a deer carcass by Kirk Mona.
The analysis of Python stomach contents indicates that they eat mammals, as small as mice, and as large as a fully grown deer. Some of these snakes had evidence of birds in their stomachs and some were gravid with up 55 eggs nearly ready to be laid. Rock Python. Photo Credits: Samuel Wright.
Speaking of pregnant snakes, do sea snakes lay their eggs ashore like sea turtles or do they keep them internally until the young are ready to hatch/ be born, like some sharks? These do lay eggs on land and are (reasonably) mobile once they hit the beach. It seems like there is great diversity in this continent. Wicked, right?
I haven’t just seen birds, but the most amazing butterflies, red squirrels, chipmunks and even a deer… all surviving in forests so close to so many people. The mystery of an egg with no markings The big mystery is that one of our pairs of Pied Oystercatchers has laid a white egg… anyone heard of our seen that before????
In breeding season grazing cattle may walk through the nest, breaking the eggs, while wild and domestic pigs may eat both eggs and chicks. In short grass, you do not know is it a Roe Deer or a Great Bustard, they are very similar in size. What treats do they face? No, far from it.
With a hardiness that belies their delicate looks (but helps explain their phenomenal success), these pioneering pigeons are already sitting on eggs at at least one location in Montana. So right now I’m feeling pretty good about Eurasian Collared-doves. Wicked, right?
While larger animals like deer and elk are usually able to escape the fire’s path, smaller animals like squirrels, foxes and snakes are not always so lucky. Birds are able to fly away, but their nests and eggs can be destroyed. So what do these facts mean for our wildlife? Some animals are injured and killed by wildfires.
It’s during these months when I cringe anytime there’s a dog on the beach (though usually dogs aren’t allowed at all), for fear it might go after a fuzzy chick or adult sitting on eggs. I saw the first sign of the impending breeding season on the beach at Deer Lake State Park.
As I watched, it slowly moved into a patch of dried vegetation and I noticed that it was settling over a single egg. Two or three eggs may be laid and either bird may incubate. Sondra Mar 22nd, 2011 at 6:29 pm AN excellent series and how COOL to see the egg–chicks will soon be in the picture! I am around to learn more.
Both Elk and songbirds have the same basic method of inseminating eggs, which is one of the steps in reproduction (but not by any means the first!), Songbirds grow the offspring internally for only a very short while, and then pop out an egg, which is then cared for over a significant period of time until it hatches.
One Roe Deer buck ran across our path. Sadly, there have been no males displaying for the last five years, so the remaining 8 females – the entire Serbian population – may only incubate unfertilised eggs. Brown Hares were everywhere. The grass is taller now and some of them may even be incubating, secretive on their nests.
Nonnative species have huge impacts on wildlife species everywhere… mice kill seabird chicks in their burrows, rats eat endangered bird eggs, overpopulated deer clear the understory of forests, pigs root out native plants and terrestrial animals, cats kill anything they can get their paws on. For example, when the U.S.
Mechanisation (ploughing and harvesting in particular), chemical fertilisers and pesticides, fire and predation all contribute to high mortality of eggs, chicks, juveniles and incubating females. In the last year, a broken bustard eggshell was found, but since no displaying was observed, those could have been unfertilized eggs.
But the rest of us rat-killing, horse-racing, lobster-boiling, deer-hunting carnivores should take the planks out of our eyes before trying to remove the speck from Vick's. I still eat eggs that come from battery hens, even though I do try to buy free range, and I wear leather, even though I only buy it used.
How do I know of their Gothic moods when they have hidden them so well in an egg-white shell of conformity? But self-dramatization is the privilege of youth, and it has no place in a competitive world where grown-up gulls have decided to adapt and comply for the sake of security and prosperity. Wicked, right?

A signal that indicated the ability to produce eggs or sperm would be nice for mating purposes, but I don’ t know of any readily available signal like that (though it can be done, actually). Caribou for instance; In this kind of deer, both sexes have antlers. More subtly, the signal can directly represent a feature of the bird.

I am a city girl and until I became a birder my contact with hunting was limited to occasionally seeing dead deer on the tops of cars in upstate New York. Henderson, 2015, Texas A&M University Press) and Nests, Eggs, and Nestlings of North American Birds: Second Edition (co-authored with Colin J. Barker and Carrol L.
Boat-tailed Grackles count eggs and chicks as part of their diet and they were well represented here today. The grackles might well be found here anyway as they like the wet habitat in Florida, but as an extra enticement, visitors feed the alligators with hot dogs and there is always a little something left over for a cheeky omnivore.
