The problem with that statement is it's not as if farmers are searching "the wild" for cows, pigs, chicken and fish, plucking them from their homes, and plopping them on a farm to live out their (shortened) lives prior to slaughter. They are created to be slaughtered. The choice isn't the wild or the farm. It's not pretty.

People in South Florida are still in an uproar over the mutilation and slaughter of 19 house cats (allegedly) by 18-year old Tyler Weinman, who was declared mentally competent and not a danger to himself or others (!). We don't say we hate pigs and want to see them writhing in pain and slaughtered. We don't say we hate cows.

14): To the animals being slaughtered, it does not matter whether their killers are local or whether they will be eaten or displayed on a wall. It’s time to stop pandering to hunters and the gun lobby and turn to humane measures to control the deer population and outlaw this barbaric pastime. Their suffering is the same.

I take umbrage at the omnivores who buy grass-fed beef and call me a barbaric savage for harvesting Maine’s overpopulated deer, moose, rabbit and fowl. Most of the deer and duck hunters I know lament the loss of an old growth forest or flood-plain swamp as much as I do. But when we start talking about the nitty gritty of ecology – deer overpopulation, invasive species, the value of a whooping crane – the “harvesters&# break camp with the “observers&# rather abruptly.

if they see a mistreated dog, and shudder to see a wounded deer in the road. And as the slaughtering of animals is not high tech, certainly no trade secrets would be at risk with the imposition of cameras. The vast number of meat eaters brake for geese, call the A.S.P.C.A. I think most would, enthusiastically.
