These large parrots are popular in the pet trade, and that’s a likely source of the population of this species on Trinidad. As I neared the shore, I spooked a hunting Striated Heron who in turn spooked a Neotropic Cormorant hunting the shallow water. Gradually, the bird drifted nearer. Crested Oropendola. Yellow Oriole.

Of course, as places that are largely “untrammeled by man,” wilderness areas also have birds ( 591 species according to one study ) for birders willing to leave roads and infrastructure behind.

Fortunately for birders, the Cape May Warbler is considered a Species of Least Concern by Birdlife International because of its large range and large and stable population. It was hard to keep up with the rapid movements of the Cape May Warbler as it hunted down its invertebrate prey but I managed some decent shots.

This species is still uncommon in the Balkans and despite the recent spread, Kalamas is the most reliable site for it in Greece (and this made my only second ever observation of them in Europe). My definition of Heaven clearly involves a place hot as Hell, but with so many birds one has to shovel them away to clear the path.

Cocoa Woodcreepers are the largest species of woodcreeper in T&T, and they have a proportionately massive bill. Many friends and guests enjoyed seeing this particular bird soar, hunt, or even sit for hours in the valley. Definitely a hawk-eagle, but which? And so, we continued. The Trumpeter Swans above, for example, winter in Washington’s Skagit Valley, where Hashimoto “attempted to capture the low light and soft grays of winter,” while also rejoicing in this conservation success story–in the early 1960’s the swan numbers in the Valley were down to 15 due to hunting, they now number 11,000.

Covenham Reservoir is the largest stretch of inland water in Lincolnshire and although it is used for various water sport activities during the year it is also used by many species of birds. I showed him the pellet and he felt the feathers were definitely Blue Jay feathers, specifically from the crest, but they did not match the beak in the pellet. Oehlenschlager apologized that he couldn’t say the exact species of bat. Who cares, the fact that he could narrow it down to 2 species was quite amazing to me.

The male of this species has a royal blue throat, a white chest and rump, and a long v-shaped tail with intermittent white patches that makes it looks like part of it are floating in space. They were my target species, and I remember being delighted in not only seeing them well, but finding feeding flocks that were remarkably unconcerned about being watched. Shooting remains a major threat to this population, for the Italians are still passionately keen on hunting. Whatever you want to call it, it’s a fascinating bird.
