The Scottish Seabird Centre supports hundreds of volunteers in the effort to eradicate this species when it was first noticed that the number of puffins was declining. An odd side effect was noticed by researchers – black irises. This was definitely a trip to remember, and we have others to thank for mentioning it.

As soon as I looked at it more closely it was quite clear that it wasn’t a scaup of any species, despite its resemblance to a North American Lesser Scaup. I hadn’t considered the possible parentage more than the two probable species involved, but intriguingly a Pochard drake x Tufted duck looks quite different.

Three Chestnut Bulbuls seem to winter on Tianmashan this year – somewhat surprising given that the HBW calls the species a year-round resident in an area at least several hundred kilometers south of Shanghai. The Rufous-tailed Robin seen at Tianmashan is another species that one would not necessarily expect here in January.

If I was an ornithologist aiming for a grant, I would now definitely highlight the need for more research on this topic. The Grey-Streaked Flycatcher looks only marginally more interesting, and while the Latin species name griseisticta sounds vaguely mysterious, it only means grey-spotted.

It was on the island of Trinidad, at the Aripo Agricultural Research Station, where all of these photographs were taken. They are considered a Species of Least Concern by BirdLife International because of their large range and stable population. The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. As a consequence, this species is only a rare vagrant in Serbia. And BNGs also had bright white cheeks, but they most definitively were Black-necked Grebes which I was able to confirm when I observed their rounded heads against the sunlit Danube surface, further away from the willows. Which costed me a lifer.
