On Mainstreaming Veganism

Vegans are now on the mainstream's radar, and unlike some vegans, I do care about what goes on in the mainstream. And last night I volunteered at an event benefiting the Office Depot Foundation (which provides backpacks for kids loaded with school essentials, among other things) and someone asked me if there were any vegan desserts!

I recall one day when his sister-in-law was speaking with him about what she was feeding her children, and it wasn't a vegan-centered conversation. Ditto for "never," "always" and other such definitive words. Sometimes permanently. I think it was about hot dogs. really, Mary?) peeved upon hearing or reading these words.

Francione has defined abolition in a certain way and if you don't adhere strictly to his definition, you are not a Francione-style abolitionist. And it usually involves exchanges with non-vegans. I could debate about language all day, with vegans and non-vegans. It helps them focus on what's really being done to animals.

On "Compassion," "Nonviolence" and "Justice"

Being vegan because you want to live as nonviolently as possible and you don't want to contribute to violence and you don't want to respond to violence with violence is admirable to some, though refusing to support the defense of sentient nonhumans when you probably would if they were humans bothers me. More likely, a flip is a shift significant enough to make the old timers who were acquainted with the original definition carp about the youngins and their wanton destruction of the English language, which for some reason they think should never change.
