Over Memorial Day weekend (23-25 May) my family and I spent the weekend along the Delaware shore enjoying the beaches, natural areas, and tourist traps that make visiting the shore such a delight. And then there were the birds that made me remember for sure that I was in Delaware and not in New York.
The official Ontario bird checklist, produced by Ontario Field Ornithologists , June 2022 listed 506 bird species**, putting it in the top tier of U.S. Small Species Accounts: Each species is allotted one page (with certain exceptions) offering basics–bird names and size, one or two photographs, and a one-paragraph description.
This is the third year that my family and some our close friends did a vacation together. To get there we would need to get out of New York, through New Jersey into Delaware, and then on through Maryland and Virginia until finally reaching our destination. Two years ago it was Culebra, Puerto Rico.
He moved from Delaware to Colorado and then like a week later this bird shows up in Denver. Most birders go a lifetime without seeing this species. But it is not just gulls that show up in surprise, but all bird families are represented with rarities in this park.
I love South Park , Family Guy , and Robot Chicken , and if you know those shows then they should be more than enough explanation for that last sentence. On a fateful day less than two years ago, Andy, me, and my wife Anita were birding southern Delaware. I now have 10 photos in my Crappy Bird Pics gallery of 9 different species.
where and when the species is likely to be seen on the east coast, flight style, size and structure as compared to similar species. Of the 426 species on the official state checklist, this guide covers 252. Attention is also paid to when and where each species is likely to be seen in the state.
The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. The refuge offers opportunities for hiking and biking trails, canoeing and kayaking on Swan Lake, bank fishing, and family friendly programs and events.”
During my previous five trips to Indonesia, I only heard but never caught a glimpse of three species. Now my tally stands at four species seen and a fifth heard-only. My Best Bird of the Year isn’t that spectacular … just my lifer Violet-chinned Hummingbird at my husband’s family’s house in CO.
For our family members and friends who are not obsessed with molt and migration, we need titles which sometimes take the form of “coffee-table books”. And then there are the activities we cram between our CBC duties, like buying holiday gifts. Mostly to other birders. The text does vary in length and detail, but it does provide context.
