The capital is San Juan, an important center of Caribbean culture and transportation. The islands were purchased by the United States from Denmark in 1916. Fish & Wildlife Service. Puerto Rico became a territory in 1898 and a commonwealth in 1952. It is now an unincorporated organized territory of the United States.
