Urban Birding in San Diego

10,000 Birds

In our early birding days, Erik and I had one of our most hilarious bird-related fights while looking at a flotilla of ducks in Mission Bay yelling at each other about field marks before realizing we were looking at two different ducks. This makes it a prime spot for bicycle-birding, our niche at the festival.

Lifer! But, which one?

10,000 Birds

This is not a species that loves to be seen, but one helpfully posed on a fencepost for me (although it was early, and a hurricane off the coast was giving us dense clouds with intermittent rains, so the light was bad). But the Mexican Ducks say otherwise. One is an aged Xoloitzcuintle, or Mexican Hairless Dog.

The Shorebirds of North America: A Natural History and Photographic Celebration–A Book Review

10,000 Birds

On THE DOG WHO COULDN'T STOP LOVING

Animal Person

When I agreed to read and review Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson's THE DOG WHO COULDN'T STOP LOVING (Harper 2010), the regal Charles Hobson Booger, III was still with us. He was adopted by the Masson family and was apparently the most loving dog all who met him had ever had the pleasure of being licked by. And the crying would never stop.

Experiencing Spring at EVOA

10,000 Birds

While walking the dog I could hear Serin , Wren and several Black Redstarts proclaiming their territories. The ponds were full of birds as usual with abundant Common Snipe as well as Ruff , some Dunlin , Stilts and a few ducks, including Red-crested Pochards. The sentinels of a Portuguese spring were singing.
