Investigative journalism by the Salt Lake Tribune, following-up on allegations levelled by PETA against the University of Utah's Comparative Medicine Center and the Cardiovascular Research & Training Institute laboratories revealed the two laboratories had used 190 dogs and cats in 2009, all obtained from shelters.

The park did have a pack of African Wild Dogs, or Painted Wolves, the species I had gone to Africa to see. The superabundance of lions and elephants in the park meant that straying on foot beyond the confines of our fenced enclosure was foolhardy, dangerous and forbidden. She came from another shelter as a stray, had been abused, was very skinny, and she was extremely shy and afraid of everyone. Within weeks, with lots of love, patience, and socializing with other tenants and pets, she was a totally different dog. Ever since I got her, she’s been an absolutely wonderful dog.

No dog is happier to be rescued. She put a dog bed outside with some food and water, and I’d see her checking on me about every five minutes. We dogs are wired by nature to be humans’ companions. After all, dogs have the longest history of co-habitation with humans of any animal. Get a street dog. I was safe.

A New York Times story that ran in 2001 about a homeless dog wandering around a suburban part of New York City, struck a chord with me. It took nine years for my picture book, THE BLUE HOUSE DOG, (Peachtree Publishers/August 1, 2010) to come out. The boy was wounded by his loss, just as the homeless dog was wounded when his owner died.

Black-headed Gulls somehow managed to build 31 nests on a few dead tree trunks left in the water, but Common Terns require bare soil and not having any on inner dykes – which were a safe haven, they build 16 nests on the higher outer dyke, a place exposed to foxes and stray dogs.

If you work full time and already have a dog, you can always request a dog-friendly foster pet who is house-trained. That could involve teaching a dog to stay off the couch or walk better on leash, or teaching a cat to welcome other pets or to play, or simply to teach trust and love. The disappearance of vultures has allowed other species such as rat and [stray] dog populations to grow. A vulture’s metabolism is a true “dead-end” for pathogens, but dogs and rats become carriers of the pathogens. Oddly, I saw no rats, only a mongoose or two and a few stray dogs.
