It took me awhile, but I managed to get on quite a few, especially when the boat slowed down to go check out some Humpback Whales and a huge number of Common Dolphins. We estimated at least 3,500 sooties and over 1,000 dolphins. It was truly an amazing experience only lessened by the fact that Desi slept through the whole thing.

Galápagos: A Natural History, Second Edition by John Kricher and Kevin Loughlin gives the traveling naturalist the tools needed to fully appreciate and experience the Galápagos Islands. I wish I had read this book. They complement Kricher’s text., The 11th chapter is on research and conservation challenges.

Some (but not most) killer whales beach themselves on land or ice to get at sea mammals or penguins, and some dolphins do similar things. My own experience at catching catfish (big ones!) Archer fish spit at invertebrates resting on overhanging vegetation to knock them into the water. As noted, the fish-like mammals do this as well.

We knew that the tern would be a long shot but prior experience with the PMMP also told us that we would probably see something cool no matter what happened. This unexpected, fine year bird was followed up with dolphins, Black Terns , Brown Boobies , and a surprise Galapagos Shearwater scoped from shore!

Perhaps the best experience of the two days I spend offshore was not a bird, but a mammal. As it was when a small pod of Gervais’ Beaked Whales, small whales that look like bulked up Bottlenosed Dolphins tolerated our approach and allowed us to have a surreal experience with this mysterious marine mammal.
