Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. Dolphins are basically just smart sharks that breath air. Now don’t get me wrong, I like dolphins. And dolphins can do bad things.
A male dolphin calf was born at Discovery Cove in Orlando Monday, February 25, at 10:05 pm. This is Kendall’s fourth birth and the 26th dolphin born at Discovery Cove since the park opened in 2000. We had been floating, birding amidst a massive flock of shearwaters, surrounded by an aquatic city of Spinner Dolphins when Wilfredo spotted two small dark shearwaters flying away from the feeding flock. And it was full of Spinner Dolphins and birds. Most photos in this post were taken by Diego Quesada of Birding Experiences.
Larger species, that is, excluding dolphins and whales. I may have very limited experience with dolphins and no experience with whales, but the illustrations show the entire animal in the way only divers can see it, without a second illustration of the tail shape, something whale-watchers can actually spot from a boat.

The two main chapters cover Marine Mammals (Orca; Whales; Dolphins and Porpoises; Sea Lions, Fur Seals, and Elephant Seal; Rarer Marine Mammals) and Seabirds (Albatrosses, Shearwaters and Fulmar, Strom-Petrels, Phalaropes, Alcids, Red-billed Tropicbird, Brown Booby, South Polar Skua, Jaegers, Gulls and Terns, Rarer Seabirds).
It took me awhile, but I managed to get on quite a few, especially when the boat slowed down to go check out some Humpback Whales and a huge number of Common Dolphins. We estimated at least 3,500 sooties and over 1,000 dolphins. It was truly an amazing experience only lessened by the fact that Desi slept through the whole thing.
This may be the most awesome pelagic you’ll ever experience… For me it was the publication in 1984 of Peter Harrison’s ground-breaking identification guide to ‘ Seabirds ’ that opened up the off-shore world of pelagic birding right on Cape Town’s door step.
Being on a boat surrounded by the endless blue of the ocean is a wonderful experience, especially when the waves aren’t too high, the sun isn’t too bright, and the birds are showing. I like pelagic birding. Being out on the water is great, even when the birds are only so-so.
Galápagos: A Natural History, Second Edition by John Kricher and Kevin Loughlin gives the traveling naturalist the tools needed to fully appreciate and experience the Galápagos Islands. I wish I had read this book. They complement Kricher’s text., The 11th chapter is on research and conservation challenges.
The guide is based on Sullivan’s composite photographic plates, which present whales, dolphins, shearwaters and petrels, alcids, jaegers, skuas, tropicbirds, gannet and boobies, flying fish, jellyfish side by side, as they are likely to be seen from a boat, though in all likelihood not in so much diversity and abundance.
Some (but not most) killer whales beach themselves on land or ice to get at sea mammals or penguins, and some dolphins do similar things. My own experience at catching catfish (big ones!) Archer fish spit at invertebrates resting on overhanging vegetation to knock them into the water. As noted, the fish-like mammals do this as well.
Discovery Cove is an all-inclusive experience in Orlando where guests can swim with dolphins, snorkel among tropical fish and interact with animals. They use their sharp claws and 16-inch-long tongue (41 cm) to eat up to 9,000 ants in a single day. Find more at DiscoveryCove.com. Cute of the day: Baby Anteater!!

We knew that the tern would be a long shot but prior experience with the PMMP also told us that we would probably see something cool no matter what happened. This unexpected, fine year bird was followed up with dolphins, Black Terns , Brown Boobies , and a surprise Galapagos Shearwater scoped from shore!
Perhaps the best experience of the two days I spend offshore was not a bird, but a mammal. As it was when a small pod of Gervais’ Beaked Whales, small whales that look like bulked up Bottlenosed Dolphins tolerated our approach and allowed us to have a surreal experience with this mysterious marine mammal.
It is acceptable to point out other sea creatures–dolphins or whales or dragonflies–but the main goal is the observation and identification of the birds. This, I am told, is seawatching , a birding activity in which one stands in one place, sometimes for hours, and watches for birds of the sea and lake and river.
In my experience, most salespeople come to the table with a range of skills and characteristics that enable them to be successful in their jobs. The salesperson is the single largest factor (39%) in a customer’s purchasing decision, with more impact than any other aspect, including product quality or pricing.
Over at Animal Rights and AntiOppression , we’ve been discussing tactics and sharing our thoughts and experiences about what works and doesn’t work when it comes to advocacy. Hal Herzog’s “ Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat ” (Harper 2011), though fascinating, is ultimately depressing for vegans and animal rights activists.
A 3 ½ foot-long, 35-pound dolphin was born at Discovery Cove ® on Friday, November 30 at 10:22 a.m. This dolphin calf is the first born at Discovery Cove that was conceived through the use of “sperm-sexing” research, which involves separating sperm carrying a female-producing X chromosome from sperm carrying a male-producing Y chromosome.
The Yangtze River Dolphin (the mammals described here are no less fascinating than the birds), iconic in Chinese culture, had its habitat was destroyed by a combination of human-introduced factors, including the blocking of the dolphins’ echolocation systems by large ships negotiating the river.
Volunteering provides a very different experience to tourism though. In the Bahamas I swam in a pod of feeding dolphins. And come the new year I’ll be telling you all about my experiences this time around. There is nothing wrong with the bird race approach to birding, or tourism in general, I should point out.
Six species of baleen whales (the most abundant – Minke , also Blue , Fin , Humpback , Sei and Dwarf Minke ) have been recorded in the Ross Sea region, together with six species of toothed whales (the most abundant – Orca , also Sperm , Arnoux’s Beaked , Southern Bottlenose , Long-finned Pilot Whales and Hourglass Dolphin ).
Grief, friendship, gratitude, wonder, and other things we animals experience. People have reported dolphins struggling to save a dead calf by pushing its body to the surface of the water. Waterfall Dances: Do animals have spiritual experiences? by Marc Bekoff. Photo by Flickker Photos.
Second, there are other species besides human beings that have high intelligence, e.g., chimpanzees and dolphins. But recent experiments with chimpanzees suggest that the day may be near when we can ask trained chimpanzees if they want to be eaten for food. What should our moral attitude be toward eating members of these species?
