Steve Kelling from the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology gave the keynote talk, “The Birder Effect: Birding, Science, and Conservation.” The talk described eBird’s origins in 2002 and traced its history as a project aimed at using “citizen science” to help researchers and conservationists learn more about birds.

And what contribution to ornithology could be more important, in these troubled times, than to see if and how birds are adapting to the ravages of climate change?

At a minimum, there should be a free and downloadable (without the need for an email address) dedicated or special issue of Birding for new birders. Birders care about bird science and conservation, but also about access to birding sites and facilities as those locations, etc.

Lewis is Dibner Senior Curator of the History of Science and Technology and Chief Curator of Manuscripts at The Huntington Library in California.

I can find no reliable estimates of the numbers of birding-related apps that have been downloaded. * * * *. Nevertheless, here are two: ABA (about 24,000 followers) and eBird (about 30,000). These numbers are also modest. Again, all of these indirect measures are imperfect.
