The region has justifiably been referred to as the “DuckFactory of North America.” WPAs provide critical breeding, resting, and nesting habitat for millions of ducks, geese, and swans, as well as shorebirds and grassland birds. For birders, the easiest and most direct way to support WPAs (and NWRs) is to buy a Duck Stamp.
I am still tired from the long drive, but it was great to play with the very best toys for birders, to be able to share experiences and to ask the factory staff all sorts of silly questions. At the end of the 20th century (and before the ELs were born), the factory hired consultants to help it restructure and maximise profits.
And the magic factories are two neighbors, Green Cay Wetlands and Wakodahatchee Wetlands. Green Cay Wetlands at sunrise for the specials – Limpkin, Purple Gallinule, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks and of course the ever-reliable (at this time of year) male Painted Buntings. We exit the car and enter magic factory number two.
Actually, when I started to bird, my second ever duck, after the Mallard , was a Ruddy Shelduck! I was in a kayak, the duck was some 4-5 metres from me, easily tolerating my interest for some 5 minutes or more, implying that it was almost certainly an escapee. Birds ducks Europe Serbia' Well, too odd to be countable.
Proposal: Creation of a Federal Wildlife Conservation Stamp A birder, wildlife watcher, photographer and non-hunter version of the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (aka Federal Duck Stamp). She says, “there’s just a cultural bias against anything related to hunting.”
Chickens come in at around 24, pigeons have around 40-50 and some duck species may have a whopping 400. Ducks are the avian leaders of bill touch. Birds use rectal bristles (at the base of the bill) and tiny touch factories called Herbst corpuscles to detect touch. And again, there is great variation amongst different species.
Indeed, sustainable hunting of ducks heps fund the NWR network, and helps protect places like the Farallon Islands, which are so vulnerable they can’t even sustain non-extractive visits from the best meaning of bird loving visitors. Unsustainable hunting leads to extinction. Sustainable hunting doesn’t.
For over a decade, Animal Equality has been on a global mission to end the force-feeding of ducks and geese for foie gras. Foie gras, French for “fatty liver,” is produced by force-feeding ducks and… Source
Foie gras production involves force-feeding ducks and geese multiple times daily until their livers swell up to ten times their natural size. Over a month ago, Animal Equality’s global team launched a campaign to remove foie gras from the 2024 Olympic hospitality menu. Many animals bleed, pant, shake, and vomit during this process.
I wrote about Waterfowl Production Areas in this region (America’s duckfactories) and want to visit, though the details of visiting an area that spans 100,000 square miles are to be determined. Prairie Pothole Region of the United States , primary in North and South Dakota, Minnesota, and Montana.
On July 22, just days before the Olympics, Animal Equality intensified its global campaign against foie gras by traveling to Paris. Advocates carried over 60,000 petition signatures, urging the Olympic organizers to remove foie gras from the VIP hospitality menu.
The final site of the day was sewage ponds of the sugar factory by the town of Kovin. This sugar factory is closed for years already and there is no one to talk to, but building a nesting raft here would be of greatest importance. A lazy raft of Ferruginous Ducks and, overhead, two Common Cuckoos chasing each other.
Sadly, the numbers of Falcated Duck are similarly declining – it is thus listed as Near Threatened. Fortunately, Tianmashan is probably too hilly to ever be turned into a Tesla factory or a technology park. And it does not even live in reeds. This is partly due to hunting in China, where about 90% of the species winter (HBW).
This year will be tough on many birds as further mudflat destruction to construct factories in China means that they may not be able to feed in areas that they have known in the past. I really can not compete with Corey and all his great photos of ducks , so here is a photo of my favourite duck door stop!
