The region has justifiably been referred to as the “Duck Factory of North America.” WPAs provide critical breeding, resting, and nesting habitat for millions of ducks, geese, and swans, as well as shorebirds and grassland birds. For birders, the easiest and most direct way to support WPAs (and NWRs) is to buy a Duck Stamp.

I am still tired from the long drive, but it was great to play with the very best toys for birders, to be able to share experiences and to ask the factory staff all sorts of silly questions. At the end of the 20th century (and before the ELs were born), the factory hired consultants to help it restructure and maximise profits.

And the magic factories are two neighbors, Green Cay Wetlands and Wakodahatchee Wetlands. Green Cay Wetlands at sunrise for the specials – Limpkin, Purple Gallinule, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks and of course the ever-reliable (at this time of year) male Painted Buntings. We exit the car and enter magic factory number two.

Actually, when I started to bird, my second ever duck, after the Mallard , was a Ruddy Shelduck! I was in a kayak, the duck was some 4-5 metres from me, easily tolerating my interest for some 5 minutes or more, implying that it was almost certainly an escapee. Birds ducks Europe Serbia' Well, too odd to be countable.

Chickens come in at around 24, pigeons have around 40-50 and some duck species may have a whopping 400. Ducks are the avian leaders of bill touch. Birds use rectal bristles (at the base of the bill) and tiny touch factories called Herbst corpuscles to detect touch. And again, there is great variation amongst different species.

Indeed, sustainable hunting of ducks heps fund the NWR network, and helps protect places like the Farallon Islands, which are so vulnerable they can’t even sustain non-extractive visits from the best meaning of bird loving visitors. Unsustainable hunting leads to extinction. Sustainable hunting doesn’t.
