The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt. Telia yawns, raises and sprays her urine on a dead tree stump, marking her territory. These are my first wild tigers ever!

The next day, I was looking at a pair of the same handsome ducks in Arctic Bay, last night there were four in my patch.

Magpie Geese were breeding close to the main highway south of Broome and so were the Whiskered Terns , White-winged Black Terns , Purple Swamphens , Comb-crested Jacanas , Wandering Whistling Ducks and Plumed Whistling Ducks. The more brightly coloured female bird remained at the back of the family group as they swam to shore.

We spent awhile scanning the lagoons and were rewarded for our efforts with a host of Ruddy Ducks , a pair of Blue-winged Teal , lots of Common Gallinules and a bunch of American Coots which would have been a lot more exciting if they were still Caribbean Coots. According to reports in the media , a recording from 1987 recently rediscovered by researchers has captured a Musk Duck ( Biziura lobata ) in Australia repeatedly uttering the phrase “You bloody fool” as part of its courtship display, apparently having picked up this impolite exclamation by mimicking overheard human speech.

Here in Broome we observe a good selection of ducks and the most prolific at the Broome Poo Ponds is usually the Plumed Whistling-Duck. One of our favourite ducks is the Pink-eared Duck. Pacific Black Ducks lay up to 16 eggs and sometimes two clutches are raised in a year.
