ELs are fat around the waist, their weight is more pronounced towards the front end, and when you raise your fingers, letting ELs rest only against your thumbs, they start falling down, front end first. And when you raise your fingers, well balanced NLs happily rest against your thumbs, not falling to either side.

The Feral Pigeon and the House Sparrow came the day after, when in the lush green oasis of the Sanitas nursery tea garden I noticed the announcement of the next meeting of the Botswana Bird Club. Under that impossibly blue sky of Africa. Waders were represented by Kittlitz’s Plover , Ruff , Wood Sandpiper , Avocet and Black-winged Stilt.

The Asian Koel is a cuckoo species and thus freed from the obligation to raise its own chicks (though the birds like to refer to themselves as brood parasites, which sounds a bit less obviously selfish). Lesser Whistling Ducks are “not threatened by hunting as they are not considered good to eat” ( Wikipedia ). Lucky ducks.

Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Hardhead, Black Kites, Australian White Ibis and Silver Gulls flew over the bay. All indications are that it was a feral or domestic cat that had caused its demise. It also raises the question on how many other rare vagrants make it to Australia and don’t even get noticed.
