There’s an incoming car in my lane, and I am not in India! Pied Avocet by Boris Okanovic Next we find ourselves at the famous fish farm in the village of Sakule. A mile later, there’s a traffic jam in front of us, where everyone stands still. There are no traces of the mist any more, the sun is finally out. Protest indeed!

The poor Mountain Bulbul carries the scientific name mcclellandii , after Sir John McClelland (1805–1875) … … even though said man mainly worked as an ichthyologist … … apart from also being sent to north-eastern India to identify if tea could be grown there.

This was only my second time ever to observe this subspecies (the first time was here as well), two other subspecies I have observed in India. I heard barely a shot or two, but the ducks were noticeably missing from the square ponds (“cubicles”) all along the levee, from where the soil to construct the levees was dug back in 1930s.

Tamarind ( Tamarindus indica ) is a real odd duck of a fruit: it grows on a tree belonging to the family Fabaceae , making it a relative of peas, beans, and legumes. III (1812-13), by James Forbes (1749-1819), a prolific British artist and author who traveled widely in India during the colonial era.

Other than paint, the only other thing I do is organize and joint-lead wildlife tours, mostly in Africa and India. Hornbills, Paradise Flycatchers , day roosting Giant Eagle Owls or if we’re really lucky Pel’s Fishing Owl , the holy grail! I am a wildlife artist based in the UK, I have never had a real job!

I observed my first GS eagles in India some 8 years ago, then the first for Europe in Greece only last December , and finally I have them in my home country list. Simply, they are among the most beautiful ducks around. Usually only several birds overwinter in Serbia – the biggest count ever was less than 10. Their claim to fame?

The catch is, the station often pumps some small fish into the pool, hence the jolly bird party. The Dalmatian Pelicans line the lake shore, especially by the small beach opposite Limnochori village, where local fisherman tie their flat-bottomed boats and, after fishing – feed the birds with small fish, not worth taking to the market.
