Reading Deb's post about the goslings at Poplar and getting Jenny 's request to sign a petition to save the Canada geese of Ballwin, Missouri from mass extermination reminded me how much I miss the wildlife at the neighborhood we lived in from 2002-early 2005. Not to be confused with Little Girl, of course. And a dead end.

A month ago I was in the Iron Gates National Park in eastern Serbia, where one Black Woodpecker flew across the road, right in front of us (proving it is an extant taxon). Birds here included geese, Greater White-fronted and Greylags and, among 25,000 of these, four rare and stunningly handsome Red-breasted Geese.

Not another person for miles, and a pair of friendly, well, almost, Great Horned Owls living in the tree right above us. Now that is a first.

Two full days at Hart Mountain Wildlife Refuge, three days at Dog Lake, and a short visit to Upper Cottonwood Lake brought back many great memories, in addition to a nice list of birds. Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge.

The nature reserve is really well managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust with numerous hides and wheelchair access to much of the reserve. The nature reserve is constantly evolving and although part of it is a former sand quarry it has been carefully developed to encourage wildlife. Greylag Geese in front of Wild Bird Cafe.

We were able to find a very nice RV park, just a couple of miles from one of my all time favourite birding hotspots, Billy Frank Jr, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. In the winter this place is alive with thousand of ducks and geese. Today, I saw a handful of Mallards , two Common Mergansers, and a Wood Duck Family.

The skies were full of thousands of Greylag Geese , Pink-footed Geese , Barnacle Geese and Brent Geese on the move and in the shallow water there were already hundreds of Bar-tailed Godwits , Eurasian Oystercatchers , Dunlin and Eurasian Curlew. Alkborough Flats were only formed in 2006 when the River Humber burst its banks and flooded 450 hectares of farmland and it is now a haven for wildlife. Greylag Geese on the move. Bird hides have been built and two small car-parks and one of these has wheelchair access to the trails. Alkborough Flats sign at top car-park.

Hunting is on a steady downturn, and nonconsumptive wildlife pursuits are on a tremendous upswing. We can fight them back in Kentucky, too.

The first surprise came, as we were driving into town, and not one, but two Scissor-tailed Flycatchers flew right across the road in front of us. This Coopers Hawk flew right up to the roof on a flood control booth, and looked at me like “ What are you doing out here” and promptly flew away. This one flew right over my head.

Many visitors appear to do the short walks, so you can enjoy the area mostly alone other than the wildlife. Although Tawny Frogmouths are well camouflaged I did notice the shape of the tree was not quite right and there they were. The Cape Barren Geese had goslings when I visited. The sanctuary is open from 8am-4pm daily.
