The festival is now in its 16 th year in the quaint-yet-vibrant town of Fallon, Nevada (about an hour east of Reno), and it draws on the wide array of birds that flock to the area during spring migration. This ABA Code 4 bird was found hanging out with some Wood Ducks in Missoula, conveniently enough, by Radd Icenoggle. I was fortunate to rack up a number of lifers in 2013, both at home and abroad ( Varied Thrush in Washington, Brewer’s Blackbirds in California, Burrowing Owl in the Nevada desert).

Birders know that some of the finest birding locations in the country are on federal land , which include national parks , wildlife refuges , forests , monuments , and seashores , among others. For example, the federal government owns less than 1% in Connecticut but nearly 80% in Nevada. But what else should birders know?

One or two Tufted Ducks show up at Lake Merritt in Oakland every year, with this drake in particular often lending itself for soul-satisfying views. The lake is a great place in winter for seeing grebes and diving ducks close up, and can offer some good gulling as well. Modoc National Wildlife Refuge, CA.

In June, the 2018-2019 Federal Duck Stamp was released. Birders have been encouraged by the American Birding Association and others to buy Federal Duck Stamps. Not long ago, I posted a list of the 25 best National Wildlife Refuges for birding. Duck Stamps and import duty contributions were similar, at about $34-38 million each.
