These two Hadada Ibis are reenacting the mirror scene from “Duck soup” (sort of). The White-eared Barbet is another bird species with an annoyingly sensible Latin species name, leucotis (white-eared). But the same species was never found again. I think the people running the place even fed them.

Lilac would have been a more appropriate name as this shrub was everywhere – seems to be an invasive species. The town is central to many other hotspots and it should be possible to get to more than 100 species in a day or two. It’s full of waders, ducks and geese. Singing birds were everywhere. While the species favors forested hills at moderate elevations ( source ), there are no hills at all here at Nanhui, so maybe these individuals are outcasts or just eccentrics.
