This story comes from Emily Johnson, who is a sub-permittee for a licensed wildliferehabilitator in Helena, Montana. The sitting duck of a crow was surrounded by a group of teenagers who were not eco-friendly. Somehow one day Russell ended up standing in the parking lot between them, his wing broken and hanging.
Normally wildliferehabilitators do not go around wearing birds on purpose. Swifts and swallows are notoriously hard to raise and/or rehabilitate, so rehabbers who don’t specialize in them tend to lose their heads when they’re successful. It’s fun to try and clean cages and feed babies with a duck attached to your shoulder.”. “I
It’s just that when summer is over and most wildliferehabilitators are fried, this is the kind of thing that will make most of us fall to our knees, choking with laughter, tears spurting from our eyes. Birds abbreviations slang wildliferehabilitators' I wonder what the other two were?”.
They are dabbling ducks which feed by upending and, you guessed it, dabbling. Unlike most other dabbling ducks however, the Northern Shovelers strain aquatic vegetation, plankton, and tiny invertebrates through the comb-like edges of their shovel-shaped bill. There are no Atlantic Puffins on Hog Island; they live locally only on Eastern Egg Rock, a painstakingly-restored seabird nesting colony which hosts three species of tern (including the endangered Roseate Tern ), Eider Ducks , Black Guillemots , and more, as well as 120 pairs of puffins. How could you not?
I didn’t know much about Flickers until I started volunteering at a wildliferehabilitation center a couple of years ago. I dare you not to duck when that happens! A couple of years ago, in the spring, the Wildlife Center had a flicker in one of the outdoor pens, getting back into shape before being released.
If this sounds like a great idea to you, providing a consistent source of income for our refuges, separate but parallel to the current Federal Duck Stamp program, and you are involved in conservation or wildlife preservation, please send me an email with a short bio and a photo (at least 150 x 150 pixels) to place on our “About Us” page.

“Here’s an idea for a blog,” wrote Donna Osburn, a wildliferehabilitator from Kentucky. It was the height of baby season, I was insanely overworked and underslept, and I did not – I repeat, did not – do waterbirds, except for mallards and Canada geese and wood ducks and swans etc. What’s your best misidentification of a bird?”.
Wildliferehabilitators are not known for our bling. People who work with wildlife wearing nice clothes? People who work with wildlife wearing nice clothes? Earrings are toast with my Wood Duck and Wild Turkeys. As for nice clothing … right! Oh my, where do I start?” And parrots =.”.
I was watching a news segment on a wildliferehabilitation center here in Florida. From 2002-2005 I was heavily ensconced in a bird and waterfowl phase with sometimes daily drama of the life-and-death variety that led to my unintentional education about all things duck (Muscovies, in particular).
