I also often observe a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles towards the hills on my left as I follow this section of trail. I always approach the bridge slowly to see what bird species are below and around the area. There is a family of feral foxes that I often encounter near Bennison Creek. Pacific Black Ducks. Sure, they’re beautiful and powerful, a reminder of the feral freedom of the skies. There are photographs of buteos soaring overhead and harriers gliding low, of eagles coming at you head-on and flying away with only the tail in focus, of falcons backlit and kites in shadows. I confess, I don’t always love hawks.

Black-fronted Dotterels , Magpie-larks and Willie Wagtails ran along the muddy edges where there was evidence of feral pigs. Raptors are well represented in the area with Black Kites , Whistling Kites , Nankeen Kestrels and Wedge-tailed Eagles. Ducks were also well represented by Pacific Black Ducks and Australian Wood Duck.

We usually try and plan a route prior to the day with particular bird species in mind and also taking into account the tidal range for the day. We rarely see them so close to town.

For Borneo I’ll be accepting the split endemic species listed in Myers (2009), some of which I think eBird could at least offer as subspecies options (I’d also welcome an eBird app that works).
