I can still hear the gunshots and hope that the hunters really do shoot only the flying birds. I veer into the very heart of the delta… and find myself in the Rubbish Alley, an illegal dumping site where people of Ammoudia leave old bricks and ceramic tiles, plastic chairs and toys, toilet seats, cut palm tree trunks and a lot more.

In a recent case involving my own facility, an immature bald eagle was hit by a car. People passed the eagle often. Rehabilitators also cooperate with law enforcement on illegal activity, and even monitor emerging diseases in avian species. He lay in a ditch with a spinal injury, unable to move.

They may have been disturbed by the presence of hunters in the Danube backwaters. When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there.

Nineteen days later we had racked up an amazing list of 436 species, including some of Africa’s least known birds such as Congo Serpent Eagle , Yellow-footed Honeyguide , Tessmann’s Flycatcher , Yellow-bearded Greenbul , Black-collared Lovebird and much besides. And wow, what a trip we had! million hectares in 2007. million hectares in 2007.
