Gazetted as the “nature monument” in 2013, one of the few remaining – Bojcinska Forest by the village of Progar covers 670 ha / 1650 ac, with around 108 bird species and some 60 species of mammals. A Lesser Spotted Eagle high in the thermal, getting ever smaller. And a White-tailed Eagle making an appearance in the same thermal!

On a recent visit I threw my bags in the hotel room and went straight there, and got over 60 species of birds in a few hours and fantastic views of Nilgai , the largest antelope in India. Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets. You should also see Gharial and Mugger Crocodiles there.

It keeps a monthly record of sightings, so I can tell you that it was in February that I recorded my highest monthly species total (106), while my lowest total was in August (39).

Many friends and guests enjoyed seeing this particular bird soar, hunt, or even sit for hours in the valley. The name “Harpy Eagle” was coined by South American explorers, and is based on the harpies of Greek Mythology. A Harpy Eagle. Drifting slower and looking closer, we observed a tiny Malachite Kingfisher hunting in the sheltered shallows. The now familiar sound of a pair of African Fish-Eagles dominated the soundscape.
