A single morning birding the thorny desert of Baringo in Kenya’s Rift Valley yielded several species at a rate I at times struggled to keep up with. Greyish Eagle-Owl. Firstly, I’ve been birding the heck out of our backyard, and encouraging people to do the same (both here and elsewhere ).
Herbert is Managing Director of Bird Uganda Safaris, LTD and his company offers a variety of birding and wildlife tours of the most naturally resplendent regions of Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda. Black-chested snake Eagle with a snake at Matheniko Wildlife Reserve Eastern Uganda. Herbert holds a B.
I had the good fortune to visit Lake Nakuru in Kenya in 2019, one of the high elevation rift valley soda lakes. Obliging species like Grey-headed Kingfisher , Long-crested Eagle , and even a pair of Greater Blue-eared Starlings ensured we didn’t get anywhere quickly.
4%: Mexico, West Papua (Indonesia), New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya. Although it has a few more birds than Costa Rica (including reliable Harpy Eagles ) and some great lodges, in ecotourism terms, Panama seem to be Costa Rica’s “little brother” (there’s a hidden message to its tourism board). 8%: Brazil, Panama. 17%: Ecuador, Peru.
This 12,000 square mile ecosystem stretches across north-western Tanzania into the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Raptors, both diurnal and nocturnal, abound in this park, from massive Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls roosting in leafy trees along the river to African Hawk-Eagles and Lizard Buzzards in the woodlands.
In my younger days I always kept year lists: my best ever year was 1986, when I topped the 1,000 mark thanks to trips to Australia, Kenya and various European destinations. Inland in the Alentejo I found Great Spotted Cuckoos and the first returning Short-toed Eagles.
It includes stunning photographs by Tipling of eagle hunters (as in Kazakhs who hunt with eagles), Stellar Sea Eagles in Hokkaido, Japan, and Black Kites at the dump near New Delhi, India. Eagles are national symbols of the U.S., The Birds of Prey chapter, on the other hand, is 18 pages long.
My only sighting until this year had been a distant speck on a far off koppie in Kenya, but this pair (they live in pairs) came very close to my safari vehicle in Madikwe in South Africa. One member of the pair keeps watch for eagles and leopards while the other feeds. They are small, at about 58 cm (23 in) at the shoulder.
Corwin tells the story of the Maasai of Kenya, whose culture involved disdain for and slaughter of lions. We can stop using animals and "allocate resources" to educate Homo sapiens worldwide to change their relationship to the animals around them.
Here, in south-west Ethiopia’s awkwardly named “Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People’s Region”, bordering Kenya and Sudan, the great Omo River dominates this dry savanna valley, resulting in some of Africa’s most well developed and best preserved arid-zone riverine forests.
I wrote previously about the prolific birding that is to be had in the small town of Baringo, Kenya. The now familiar sound of a pair of African Fish-Eagles dominated the soundscape. Blue-cheeked Bee-eater (above), African Fish-Eagle (below). That post dealt specifically with the dry scrub that surrounds Lake Baringo, however.
It is related to hawks and eagles, but only distantly, with an estimated divergence date not long after the K-T extinction. Secretarybird ( Sagittarius serpentarius ) in Kenya by David J.
The Lilac-breasted Roller is the national bird of Kenya, but of course, this does not help it pay its bills in South Africa. Due to some misallocation of bird species, I saw the Bateleur Eagle near Malelane, not near Bateleur Camp, where a more professional marketing team would have located the bird. Thanks for pointing that out.
