The only wildcat I found was illegally killed by hunters during closed season. Photographed within Beljarica: five White-tailed Eagles by Snezana Panjkovic. Two hundred metres further on, two young White-tailed Eagles were soaring. Yet, the primary job of Beljarica is not to support eagles and otters, but to control the floods.

One Common Raven is disappearing towards its nest among the branches of the poplar plantation, only to reappear a few minutes later to give a good chase – aerial acrobatics included – to its first neighbour, the White-tailed Eagle which breeds in the vicinity. My first live otters ever (the only previous one was a road-kill)!

They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). Tiphys died either of a snakebite or of a mysterious illness but he was not killed by either a tiger or a rhinoceros. Lucky him, right? Though he ended up dead anyway.

They are doing it bare-handed without any protective gear.’ The forest also acts as a buffer to protect the coastline against cyclones and rising sea tides. When those roots are coated in oil, it could damage and even kill some of the trees.

After the Common Starling , my second bird of the morning becomes the largest eagle of Europe, the White-tailed Eagle , this one with a fairly white tail, yet still dark beak, that I estimate to be in its 3rd calendar year. Looking miserable with its feathers soaked, one yellow and blue European Bee-eater sits on a dead branch.

She has a captive-bred education bird named Xena, a Eurasian Eagle Owl. We released live mice into the flight so they could learn to catch and kill live prey. We would close the flight around 10 PM to protect them from predators, then we’d get up at four in the morning to open the door again. Release day came. It was great!

The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators. So, the best way to find a leopard is to find the kill. It was a fresh kill, and though it might take hours, the observers knew that eventually the leopard was going to come back for his breakfast. This is a big young ‘un!

The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection. The drongo perches above the flock, snatching insects that they disturb, and keeping an eye out for predators that might go unnoticed by its hunting flock-mates. A good way up one of the tallest pines is an Eagle’s nest. Every year there manage to be two eagles up there in that nest. Ducks are easier prey for the Eagle. You can tell when the Eagle is aloft because the Loons alarm call. Every now and then you see an Eagle and a Loon interact a bit. So, no Eagles maybe.
