The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators. So, the best way to find a leopard is to find the kill. It was a fresh kill, and though it might take hours, the observers knew that eventually the leopard was going to come back for his breakfast. This is a big young ‘un!

Back to the Mikri Prespa , where mostly Dalmatian, with two White Pelicans among them, were circling, while one Short-toed Snake Eagle glided across. After the Common Starling , my second bird of the morning becomes the largest eagle of Europe, the White-tailed Eagle , this one with a fairly white tail, yet still dark beak, that I estimate to be in its 3rd calendar year. She has a captive-bred education bird named Xena, a Eurasian Eagle Owl. We released live mice into the flight so they could learn to catch and kill live prey. We would close the flight around 10 PM to protect them from predators, then we’d get up at four in the morning to open the door again. Release day came. It was great!

The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection. The drongo perches above the flock, snatching insects that they disturb, and keeping an eye out for predators that might go unnoticed by its hunting flock-mates.
