The place was lousy with Swainson’s Hawks , and we may even have spotted a distant Golden Eagle. The specials for our dinner at The Slanted Porch in Fallon included dishes prepared from cows and lambs raised by local 4-H Club kids.).

The cuisine was magnificent, especially lamb. Short-toed Snake-Eagle – Circaetus gallicus. The bear walks are relatively easy and, while possible in sneakers, some light ankle-support hiking shoes might be preferable. Also, trekking poles proved useful. Finally, Greeks do have some magic potion called tsipouro, very worth trying.

Perhaps the time has come, though, to retire the bit about lions and lambs. Let’s say instead that March comes in like an eagle and out like a dove. Oh to be on the Sanetti Plateau in Ethiopia ! March, at least in my part of the world, is living up to its billing as a ferocious starter.

“Bird Count at Cano Negro” was too mundane to portray the boat rides, mosquitoes, remote habitats, the surprise lamb chops lunch, and other situations. With that tragic news went any hopes of finding something like a Crested Eagle or Great Jacamar but it would still be exciting to visit. What still lived there?
