And that’s just the birds–you can spy on everything from panda bear cubs to beluga whales. Plus, we’re told, the brown bear cam features frequent cameos by Bald Eagles !). Photos courtesy of explore.org/projectpuffin and Audubon. Birding Birds terns video'
This Yellow-crowned Amazon was not quite as vociferous as his Central American cousins And like many of these birds, I too love to spend time beneath the water – there are few things better than free diving or scuba diving with dolphins, whale sharks or coral reef fish. Eagle Owls are often seen hiding in small caves.
Twenty-five-year-old Luna Burke is risking everything to smuggle a homicidal Bald Eagle out of her husband’s private zoo in Florida, reunite the bird with its mate, and get them both to an eagle sanctuary in Canada. Have you had rehab experiences with eagles? I’ve only handled a couple of eagles, and they were awesome birds!
There was no pretending this was a whale-watching trip, a ruse that is growing stale anyway. Bald Eagles competed with hauled out Harbor Seals for our attention and we were told that the concentration of eagles was due to the salmon not yet running in the rivers. And quite a view it was! Nice work if you can get it.
Another highlight is the eyrie of a pair of Verreaux’s or Black Eagles , one of the handsomest eagles on the planet! And then there are the Ground Woodpeckers ! These are one of only three ground-dwelling woodpeckers in the world.
And we did , for the Peregrine Falcon and Osprey , the Brown Pelican and Bald Eagle. Everything was going to be extinct – the condors, the whales, the Whooping Cranes , the elephants and tigers, the whole shebang, and that was even if we didn’t get nuked. We could do it! Then the 80s happened. Good times, I tell you what.
We later signed up for a whale and birdwatching tour with Captain Wayne , who had a smallish 12-person boat. An auspicious Bald Eagle sighting – positioned high in a pine tree – heralded the beginning of a magical afternoon, where we sailed amidst over a million breeding seabirds. Happy puffins. Murres and Kittiwakes.
On the other extreme you have outrageous stories like the supposed Thunderbird photograph of the America West, ambiguous winged creatures like Mothman and the Jersey Devil, and the impossible but incredibly persistent belief that (modern, extant) eagles can and will carry off small children. Come on — obviously Photoshopped!
Birds like American Coots and Long-eared Owls in Arviat, to Bald Eagles in Whale Cove. White-rumped Sandpiper And this year has been notable for several birds that wouldn’t normally be found here.
1) Dusky Eagle-Owl. There’s a lot of good birding to be done at the Taj Mahal: Rose-Ringed Parakeets and Red-vented Bulbuls on the grounds; Painted Storks and Pied Avocets along the Yumana River, seen from the Taj terrace; Booted Eagles and Black Kites flying overhead. 2) Plum-headed Parakeet. But, I saw the bird!
I watched this Bald Eagle catch and eat a Blue-winged Teal at Viera a couple of years ago. Past trips have had jaegers, Humpback Whales , and a variety of other sea life. Viera is great, full of good birds, and well worth visiting. The regular birds are pretty special and you never know when a major rarity might show up.
The group we were with mentioned that they had seen Minke Whales just off the coast of the fjords the day before, but we missed out on our drive back south. Sadly, I missed out on seeing White-tailed Eagles and Harlequin Ducks. In fact I don’t think the sun ever set while we were in Iceland.
Many robins, eagles and finches later, he ended up at university studying various biology things and wrote a thesis on vertebrate biogeography in southern African forests. Dale studied scarlet macaws, and worked in their conservation, for three years in southern Costa Rica, followed by a year in the Caribbean working on Whale Sharks.
Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. Sometimes they have to protect their catches from piratic African Fish Eagles who swoop down as soon as they that see a Saddle-bill has successfully caught a fish.
For a split-second I was considering the white morph of the Booted Eagle… while noticing that they do not have long stork necks and that they were… Egyptian Vultures ! Asia: Somewhere below that mysterious eagle, at the far shore of the lake, lies one Bengal Tiger … and further to the right – two more! Like a school bus big.
