Bird watching Recinto 23 de Junio is always a great experience. There are not many places in Ecuador, or for that matter in the world, where you can see these all these birds in the same area. The funny thing is that this great place is not even mentioned on the latest National Plan for Development of Birdwatching Tourism in Ecuador.

Currently endemic to a single valley system in the Andes of Ecuador, this species escaped detection from researchers for thirty years until the rediscovery of a few pairs in November 1998 by Dr. Neils Krabbe. In November 2010, I backpacked for fifty days via the reasonably good bus system in Ecuador.

On a recent filming trip with Tropical Birding in Ecuador I had the awesome experience of getting up close and personal with two bizarre manakin species. This bird is a Choco endemic found only in northwest Ecuador and southwest Colombia. Are they for real? Take the Club-winged Manakin for example.

This was an amazing experience which confirmed the continued destruction of the forest caused by the insatiable expansionism of humans. My wife and I spent two weeks in Brazil birding the Atlantic Forest and The Pantanal.

Voice is a sharp, piercing phrase of a double note and a harsh single note; and it inhabits undergrowth at borders of forest, woodland and riverine belts, while its range stretches from W Ecuador to NW Peru.

This spectacular, turkey-like bird roams the floor of tropical forests from eastern Mexico south to northwestern Ecuador. It also ranges widely from Mexico south to western Ecuador. Come on down and see if you can experience a neotropical turkey-trogon-cotinga fest! Ain’t I great?

This last trait can be attributed both to the terrific verticality of this humid cloud forest and also to its location in the Chocó bioregion , an Endemic Bird Area that encompasses much of western Colombia and Ecuador. completed the experience. The amazonian basin is a very important area for Ecuador since it produces 500,000 barrels of oil per day which is the main source of income for our economy. Unfortunately only 63% of this oil is produced by state owned companies, and the 37% left is still fattening the profits of other companies that are not a direct benefit to our economy.

The walk to this evocative riparian grotto is actually rather short, but the experience feels akin to a ritual to anyone who has long anticipated dropping in on the diablotin. I actually turned down an opportunity years ago to see this species in Ecuador because I wanted the Dunston Cave birds to be my first.

The same can be said about the population in Colombia and Ecuador so this could end up being a future, three-way split. Although more detailed playback experiments are required, a few preliminary ones I carried out showed support for the idea that there are two species of Buff-throated Foliage-gleaners in town.

Endangered and awesome, it’s pretty easy to experience this big parrot in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica from Tarcoles north to near Nicaragua. Another spectacular bird that can also be seen in the Darien and a few other sites is still most accessible in Costa Rica. Yellow-naped Parrot. Bare-necked Umbrellabird.

I photographed this Guianan Cock-of-the-rock at a lek site near Surama, deep in the rainforest zone of Guyana, and my incredible experience with Andean Cock-of-the-rocks was at a display lek on the edge of the town of Jardin, in the coffee-belt of Colombia, both just incredible birds that make the heart soar with joy!

I had just ended my ten-day birding adventure in Ecuador (which is a story for another time) when I decided, since I had an amazing time, to prolong my trip a bit longer before heading back to Europe. Famous ornithologist Ted Parker crashed into a mountain in Ecuador while surveying birds. Having learned from my Namibian experience I walked away briskly. She died in a car accident during a birding trip. And one of the first stories in her biography is how her friend died of altitude sickness. And so forth.

I guess you cannot be too choosy while traveling, as I have learned when on trips in Ecuador and other places. The Eurasian Wryneck also struggles a bit with regard to colors – it still looks like an experiment in different, not quite matching patterns of various shades of brown.
