The turkeys I’m talking about up in here are three of the five members of the Cracidae family that occur in Costa Rica. Ain’t I great?

But the sleekest of the sulids may be found in the family Sulidae. However, Sula nebouxii is most closely associated with Ecuador’s evocative Galápagos Islands. The order Suliformes holds a lot of special birds from anhingas and darters to cormorants and shags as well as frigatebirds, pelicans, and tropicbirds.

Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. This former aberrant wood-warbler is so weird, it has been given its own family. No turkeys up in here, just a big wild and crazy Cracid! In some spots, this amazing bird even visits feeders. Buff-fronted Quail-Dove.

In spite of this New Zealand does have an iconic family of birds that has served as an emblem for the country for over a century, the kiwi. They are commonest where they are intensively protected and managed, but these places are often remote and hard to visit. They would all be wrong, as New Zealand has no official National Bird.
