AVMA Board chair addresses challenges to VCPR, advocacy efforts

Dr. Charles Lemme was elected chair of the AVMA Board of Directors this past July during AVMA Convention 2023 in Denver. About halfway through his term, he spoke with AVMA News about the Association’s grassroots opposition to a “well-funded” campaign to redefine the veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR). He also shared other areas of AVMA engagement, including federal advocacy and support for technological advances.

Well, 2023 has ended, so it’s time to look back at the past year’s birding. The pleasures of birding are many and varied, so this kind of post always involves a list. In this case, I had not yet written about some of these sightings, so there will actually be a bit of new information in this post. I will also return to several birds which have already appeared here.

Birding Tradition: the New Year’s Day List

Starting the New Year by trying to see as many species as possible is something of a birding tradition. One of my more memorable New Year’s days was in the Falkland Islands, back in 1989. My diary notes that the New Year dawned grey and windy, but I rose early, walked six miles before breakfast and noted a modest 26 species of birds. Like many offshore archipelagos, birds are few in variety on the Falklands, though many individual species are great in numbers.
