Chronic wasting disease (CWD) continues to threaten deer and elk populations as it has been detected in free-ranging cervids in 34 states and four provinces and in captive cervid facilities in 19 states and three provinces. Most recently, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced May 7 that it had been detected in the state’s deer and elk.

In my neighbourhood, there are multiple stray dogs (around 7-8). One of them is a black stray dog whom I find very scary. I am very comfortable around rest of the stray dogs. Except that black dog, I am very easy with rest of the dogs and don't have an iota of fear of them. I don't understand why I am so afraid of that black stray dog. He never bit me.

A Japanese book on Hokkaido birds lists 6 species of woodpeckers – I saw three of them, presumably the most common ones. The most interesting of the three (at least to me) is the Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker. While the name suggests an endemic, it is not – it can also be found in Northeastern China, parts of Russia and the Koreas (though I would probably advise against a birding trip to North Korea).
