International birding tourism after the Covid-19 – what will change?

10,000 Birds

We are stuck. In a world we made. I remember a cartoon showing the prehistoric Earth as a vast forest with tiny villages fenced-off due to dangerous animals, and the today’s Earth as a wasteland, with a few tiny forests remaining, fenced-off due to abominable humans. It may look like a cartoon, but while birding Philippines, Phoebe Snetsinger literally slept in a prison, because its buffer zone held the only remaining forest in the agricultural landscape.

Teaching Ornithology in High Schools

10,000 Birds

In 2018, I read an article in Birding magazine by Jeff R. Manker about teaching ornithology in high schools. (It was later re-published on the All About Birds website.) That article left an impression and I have wondered what became of Manker’s effort to create a high school ornithology curriculum. Manker’s thesis is that ornithology is an excellent gateway to students becoming science majors in college and, more broadly and longer-term, conservation-minded citizens.

A pair of Beach Stone-curlews

10,000 Birds

I thought the fact that it is Valentine’s Day today it was a good enough excuse to share with you some recent photos of a pair of Beach Stone-curlews. We are very lucky that we regularly observe this pair of birds on the Northern end of Cable Beach. We believe they may well be the pair of Beach Stone-curlews that we used to observe at Willie Creek many years ago.

A Cuckoo in Costa Rica Brings in the Birders

10,000 Birds

12 species of cuckoos are on the Costa Rica bird list. One of them, the Greater Ani, is rare and odd vagrant that has only been seen a few times in the canals of Tortuguero National Park. Tortuguero- one of many excellent birding areas in Costa Rica. Another, the Cocos Cuckoo requires a looong (but pelagic filled!) boat ride to Cocos Island. However, the ani is easily seen in many other places and, as long as you reach its island home, the Cocos Cuckoo is fairly easy to see.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of February 2021)

10,000 Birds

Congratulations! Not only have we completed Birding Tourism February , but we’ve also collectively made it through what is usually one of the least exciting birding months of the calendar year. This is not to say that fantastic birds cannot be found in February, but rather that we’re mostly picking through the remainders of the last season.

Hot Times at the Old Watering Hole

10,000 Birds

I promised last week to reveal (this week) which Very Special Birds had allowed themselves to be seen on that week’s Monday outing. But the temptation had been mounting to talk about how much activity my birdbath has been drawing to my garden now that Morelia is in the height (depth?) of its dry season. So I’ll have to make myself a liar, and promise to make that reveal later.

So Far, So-So

10,000 Birds

As I mentioned last week, 2021 is getting off to a bit of a slow start. You might imagine this is because of pandemic restrictions, but actually, that hasn’t been a big problem, as long as I keep my birding local. Instead, the problem seems to be the cumulative effects of two years of insufficient rains here. As I result, January gave me my slowest start for Michoacán in four years, as far as my number of species is concerned.

High Elevation Birding in Costa Rica at Providencia

Costa Rica is a tropical country but it doesn’t have to be hot. Crunched and uplifted by plate tectonics, its also a mountainous, volcanic nation with land heading thousands of feet into the near atmosphere. This uplift, this natural reaching towards the stars and the outer deep blue also makes it a place of cool, temperate weather. The locals call it “cold” When you get used to living in warm Costa Rica, it can be tempting to follow suit and refer to 50 temperature fall weathe

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of February 2021)

10,000 Birds

February feels like a step forward to our next season, but we’ll still be as mired in winter or summer, depending on your hemisphere, at month’s end as we are right now. Learn to love it! I’m really saying this for myself, since I absolutely hate being cold but live in a place that LOVES to be cold. The silver lining to these frigid winters is that birds are very active around my house, so I can enjoy cool cold-weather birds like Red-breasted Nuthatch from a warm perch.

Celebrate Birding Tourism This Month with 10,000 Birds

10,000 Birds

The global pandemic and resulting social distancing dystopia triggered by novel coronavirus affected virtually everyone on Earth, but not all in the same way. Many lost lives, while others lost livelihoods. Even that corner of existence where birds meet watchers that so many of us like to spend time in felt the impact of COVID-19 in a few big ways: Birds carried on as always, perhaps even better than usual thanks to the wane in travel and resulting emissions.

Those who read my posts each week (and I know you’re out there, a few of you have said so) know that 2021 is shaping up to be a decidedly bipolar birding year for me here in Michoacán. Creepers in the Forest

Getting familiar with birds is a process. As a child, poring through the pages of the Encyclopedia of Animal Life (I was gifted this 25 years before I appeared in Audubon magazine myself) birds gripped my attention. If anyone else had this book growing up you’d be well aware of how its pages were the equivalent of the unending scrolling on Facebook.
