On SPECIESISM, by Joan Dunayer

Animal Person

I finally read SPECIESISM , by Joan Dunayer, which was published a couple of years after ANIMAL EQUALITY , which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. This book has so many great quotes that I'm going to have to write a couple of posts about them. Off we go (and all of the below are exact quotes). Whenever the media report that someone has killed "an endangered animal" or "an endangered species," they too confuse an individual with a species.

From Today's New York Times

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: Re “ Animal Abuse as Clue to Additional Cruelties ” (news article, March 18): As someone who deals with dozens of cruelty-to-animals cases every week, I applaud states that are imposing stricter penalties on people who hurt animals and that are working to establish online registries of animal abusers. Animal abusers are cowards who take their issues out on “easy victims”—and their targets often include their fellow humans.

Are Published Animal Studies Skewed?

Critter News

Here's an article in Nature about how many animal studies with negative or inconclusive results go unpublished. It raises the question of how useful animal research really is if we only see the studies that show relevant results. What about the ones that are negative because animals are not really representative of human biology? Or negative for whatever other reasons?

Knowing them, I bet they were hoping for fish and chips instead!).

On ANIMAL EQUALITY, by Joan Dunayer

Animal Person

A handful Animal Person readers since May of 2006, when I started this then-daily blog, have asked me if I've read Joan Dunayer. And now that I've read Animal Equality and begun Speciesism , I think I know why. My deconstructions of the language of our relationship with sentient nonhumans in this blog--and the way I approach discussing that relationship--is similar to Dunayer's.

On Honoring Living "Things"

William Horden's, " The Sacred Space of the Shared Heart " is exactly the type of piece I am talking about when I express frustration over "spiritual" people who kill nonhuman animals or who have them killed for a meal. "My father once explained to me that he felt the profoundest guilt for having to kill other living things in order to survive, so much so that he never took more that he needed and he always apologized to the spirit of the animal or plant for cutting its life short.

I'm not saying that criticism of PETA, or any other group, isn't warranted.
