As anyone who writes and edits knows, it's far easier to produce a longer powerful, thorough piece than a shorter one. I intentionally deleted the entire section on the environment, I'm not dealing with the health benefits of not using animals, and meanwhile I wanted to present a logical progression of comments and questions that, for its perspective, was thorough.

To the Editor: Re “ Snake Owners See Furry Bias in Invasive Species Proposal ” (news article, Jan. 9): The Fish and Wildlife Service is right to propose a ban on the sale of nine large constricting snakes for the pet trade. In addition to the effects of these invasive species on ecosystems, there are also compelling humane and public safety arguments for restricting trade.
The decision to add a canine companion to your family is certainly a big one. Many factors need to be considered including breed, size and energy level. With the growing awareness of pet overpopulation more and more families are choosing to adopt a shelter dog and save a life. When adopting a rescue there are added considerations on selecting the right dog for your lifestyle.
11pm: Tuck foster dog (aka Munchkin – after 34 they’ve all become “Munchkin”) in on the couch and head off to bed. 2am: Wake up to “tap, tap, tap, tap” as Munchkin frantically searches the house for companionship. Tuck Munchkin back in and go back to bed. 4am: Wake to the smell of poop. POOP! Munchkin pooped in the kitchen, but that’s okay because we’re working on paper training with this one.

Small dog owners know that a luxating patella can be a problem. Our sweet Baby recently had surgery to correct her luxating patella, which had slipped out of place and was causing her a lot of problems walking. At 7 years old, there had a been a few times before when it seemed to slip out, but it always seemed to go back in. We were quiet surprised to find that she needed surgery.

After failing miserably at a long pamphlet in 2007, I decided to shorten it by 50% and focus on a different audience: people who use animals. I think part of the original work's problem was that it was too ambitious--not to mention expensive to produce--and everything suffered. I wanted to reach people who use animals, but also people who don't, yet who nevertheless advocate for the regulation of the use of animals or give money to organizations that do.

Awful. For the full Toronto Star story, go here. The arrival of 48 monkeys on a flight from China this weekend has brought Air Canada under fire for shipping primates destined for research laboratories, but the airline says it is obliged by federal law to accept monkeys as cargo. A Pearson International Airport employee tipped off the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection that a shipment of monkeys destined for Montreal was being held at the Toronto airport after arriving from China on
Hello dear readers! I have been away from the blog for a bit. Between making sure that Baby’s patella heals properly (and thank you all for the tips), to going to a conference, there hasn’t been much time for blogging. Not to worry though, there are so many fun things that I have to share in the coming days. Baby has been keeping the computer safe while I was away.
From the Lexington Clipper-Herald. click here for the full article. Two bills introduced in the Nebraska Legislature are drawing fire from the largest animal advocacy organization in the world. Newcomer to the Legislature Sen. Tyson Larson introduced LB 305 on Wednesday, which would create a state meat inspection program, which would in turn allow horse meat to be transported across state lines.
This sounds awful. Go to AFP for the full story. Every year on the night of January 16, the eve of Saint Anthony's day, the patron saint of animals, the paved streets of the small town of 600 people are transformed into a sort of racetrack in which the fences are burning logs. "It's a festival in which the horses are sanctified by the flames, they are liberated from all their ills," said Quique, 30, who takes part in the festival every year.
In order to offset the loss of the seal product market in Europe, Canada has made a deal with China. I'm not surprised. China as a whole still doesn't have a national conscience about these issues. Although 40 Chinese animal rights groups have protested, they don't really have any political or financial clout to change anything.
PETA has complained to the USDA that the University of Texas has been severely mistreating its lab animals. There may be a surprise inspection, but I don't really understand how effective a "surprise" inspection is when the facility is notified in advance!!
I got the chance recently to read A Dog’s Purpose , a book that is told from the perspective of a dog! I started reading the book and could not put it back down! First, I got pulled into the story of a sweet dog named Toby who was rescued by an animal lover who, while good hearted, wasn’t doing things according to the rules. Then suddenly Toby’s story ended in the saddest of ways (euthanized).
Would you consider cloning your dog? Dog, Inc.: The Uncanny Inside Story of Cloning Man’s Best Friend explores the complex, and surprisingly intriguing, world of animal cloning. I was pulled into the book, and really had a hard time putting it down. From a billionaire with an interest in science and a desire to clone his lover’s dog Missy, to the police dog from Nova Scotia who found the last survivor victim of the attacks on 9/11, the book is full of characters both human and animal
I propose that the moral significance of the suffering, mutilation, and death of non-human animals rests on the following, which may be called the overflow principle: Act towards that which, while not itself a person, is closely associated with personhood in a way coherent with an attitude of respect for persons. So stated, the overflow principle is intended to express a strict requirement of morality, although the principle will no doubt have ramifications within the aspirational dimension of m
Bad allegations connected to Whistler. Full article at the BBC News. Canadian police are investigating the reported killing of 100 huskies which had been used to pull tourist sleds in the ski resort of Whistler. An animal rights group claims the dogs were killed inhumanely by an outdoor adventure company and thrown into a mass grave. Local media reports say business slumped after the 2010 Winter Olympics and the dogs were no longer needed.
