'One of the reasons I enjoy about reviewing books is the opportunity to read titles I wouldn’t ordinarily encounter, not because they aren’t good but because they don’t fall easily into a category. Lost Animals: Extinction and the Photographic Record by Errol Fuller is one of these books. Yes, it is about extinction, a popular topic in the Year of the Passenger Pigeon.
'Hopefully you will never need to know how to perform CPR on your dog or cat, but it is important to know how should the worst happen. Pet choking and cpr [Infographic] by the team at Kurgo. The post Pet Choking and CPR Infographic appeared first on 4 The Love of Animals.
'Sales enablement is a nebulous, often undefined term in the world of sales. Since no single definition of sales enablement exists, companies and industry organizations are defining sales enablement on their own terms.
'To the Editor: Once again people associated with the animal rights group PETA ( letter , June 19) have tried to disparage the commitment circuses have for animal care and conservation. Despite the claims made in the letter, circuses like Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey are dedicated to providing the very best of care for all our animals, especially the Asian elephant.
'Nature lovers, rejoice! The National Park Service is finally going to remove the feral cat colony from Plumb Beach, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. Signs like the one above went up late last week. Seeing as Plumb Beach is a known stopover area for large numbers of shorebirds, a known breeding area for a variety of saltmarsh species, including Clapper Rails , and habitat for a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, insects, and other bird species, this is a long overdue move.
'So you want to dip your feet into the murky, highly questionable waters of the Birdosphere eh? Well, although I am hard at work being the leading world birder, I’ve somehow had the time to become an old hand at this blogging stuff as well. Among the things that more and more birders have mentioned to me over the years is their urge to start their own birding blog, but they just don’t know how to go about it.
'This is a story of how an evil corporation was … I’d like to say “was brought to its knees,” but will settle for “was forced to endure a setback.”. Last week the poison manufacturer Reckitt-Benckiser announced it would pull 12 of the most toxic forms of D-Con, its popular rodenticide, from store shelves. This was more than 30 years after these types of anti-coagulants had first been implicated in the deaths of protected wildlife and pets, as well as the sickening of children.

'Hugh Powell is a science editor at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Hugh, who years ago helped me find my first Pauraque in the Rio Grande Valley , visited Peru as part of the 2014 World Birding Rally, where he stopped thinking of himself as an experienced birder. This is his first contribution to 10,000 Birds. : Come to Peru, they said. There’s this World Birding Rally that’s going to blast across 1,500 kilometers of northern Peru.
'It is mid-day of the mid-summer day in the Balkans. And it is hot. My wheels are rolling down the dirt track in the Carska Bara Ramsar site, through the meadows and arable fields interspersed with depressions filled with water and overgrown with reeds. A small flock of European Bee-eaters is in flight around their nesting hillock and on the hillock – stands a pair of adult White-tailed Eagles !
'It has been discovered that largosity and flightlessness, which perhaps fortunately tend to go together in birds, evolved more than once. The original story is that emus and ostriches and moas and such evolved as a separate group of birds from all the other birds, from the basal birdish thing that gave rise to all the living birds, and became a large land bird.
'Birding in Israel? Report your sightings to help build an eBird-like database of the country’s avifauna. New studies find that: when birds migrate from the Arctic to South America, fragments of mosses, fungi, and other “diaspores” hitch a ride (and a similar phenomenon may have spread acacia trees from Hawaii to an island in the Indian Ocean); caterpillars which feed on many different types of plants are more attractive meals for birds than caterpillars which subsist on only one or two specie

'I thought I would talk about our team’s performance in the World Birding Rally Challenge in Northern Peru and the side attractions along the route. Then, I saw Hugh Powell’s superb post. I thought of maybe topping Hugh’s “ Be Careful What You Wish For: A Punter’s Guide To The World Birding Rally ” post, but I quickly realize, there is no way I could even come close to match the depth and writing quality of his post.
'Yellow-throated Warblers are a rarity in New York State and as I mentioned earlier this year they are usually considered an “overshoot,” that is, a bird that usually breeds further south that occasionally flies past its breeding grounds during migration before realizing what it has done and turning around to go back to where it belongs.
'Can the best bird of your weekend be one you didn’t see? Obviously, not seeing a desired bird can place the offender in the Worst Bird of the Weekend category. We’ve all been there, right? But search your soul… could you possibly take pleasure in a special bird like the tasty vagrant that popped up in the most unlikely place or maybe one far from home that a friend just added to the life list?

'These days I am busy with something called the “avitourism product“ of Belgrade, Serbia. Yes there are birding sites and there are birds – but hardly much info about them (beside Fat Birder ). When discussing this topic for local media, I often say that because of their White-tailed Eagles , the Scottish island of Mull makes 2 million pounds per year from birders alone.
'The Impala is an slim, elegant antelope which is seen over most of sub-Saharan Africa, wherever there are a few Acacia bushes or some grass. Young males are turned out of the maternal herds once they reach an age at which they begin to compete with the dominant male. They form bachelor herds where they test their strength against their peers, finding their natural place in the hierarchy.
'While we are away in the Southern Highlands trying to keep warm and enjoying the bird species of that area I will share with you some of our local Broome birds. The most common Honeyeater that visits our garden is the Brown Honeyeater and it visits from before dawn until dusk. We have managed to attract this species quite easily by planting a lot of native flowering plants in our garden and they are also attracted by the constant supply of fresh water.
'Keep your eyes to the skies for hunting falcons ! Is it that time already, when a young birder’s fancy turns to, um, non-birds ? Indeed, those long hot stretches between migratory periods can try a bird watcher’s soul as surely as a cold, dark, birdless winter. Fortunately, once you get tired of your local residents, you can expand your interest in nature towards everything else that blooms and bustles in summer.
'On Wednesday morning, 18 June, I had some time for birding because my job is such that sometimes I have to work a later shift. No one heard any complaints from me about this, as I was out at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge with the rising sun. By 8:00 AM I had finished up my walk around Jamaica Bay and decided to head out to the Rockaways to check out a few birding spots out there.
'The solstice serves as a sunny reminder of the mutable nature of our days. Some of us enjoyed our year’s longest stretch of daylight this weekend, while others endured their longest night. To paraphrase an insightful innuendo, it’s not the length of the day but how you spend it. I hope you spent your solstice well. I enjoyed all manner of early summer entertainment and look to the Barn Swallow s that bombed us as we picked strawberries and soared daringly along the lakeshore as my B
'If you are a young birder, or have helped mentor one, Leica Sport Optics wants to reward your enthusiasm. The company is holding an essay contest aimed at drumming up interest in youth birding. All the details are here , and the deadline is June 30th , 2014. To sum up, adults (age 22 or older as of June 30) should write a short essay describing a “memorable birding experience while mentoring one or more young birders.
'As I bird, walk the dog or run errands, puffs of white float down on the breeze. Up on Higgins near the book store it’s just the occasional bit of fairy floss angling down across my vision. Near the river it’s a blizzard, complete with drifts on the sides of the path and white flotillas on the water. The cottonwoods, a division in the larger clan of poplars, are named for these unmissable seeds.
'Keeps your eyes to the skies. Maybe you’ll see albatrosses ! Many civilized nations choose the third weekend in June to honor fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. In response, many fathers elect to celebrate their paternity by ditching their progeny. Is this civilized behavior? I wouldn’t go that far but will point out that you’ll see a lot more birds if you leave the kids at home!
'Earlier this spring I spent some time exploring some parks in Queens that I had never visited before. I know, I know, it is hard to believe that there were parks left in Queens that had never been graced by my presence but somehow a couple of locations had escaped my notice. One of those parks, Brookville Park in southeastern Queens, was noteworthy to me because I saw several early Yellow-crowned Night-Herons there, the first that were reported in the state this year.
'Is it mere coincidence that Father’s Day falls on such a perfect weekend for birding? I think not. I took my brood to explore Chimney Bluffs State Park, where we explored a glacier-carved landscape unlike any I’ve seen in New York State. I was pleasantly surprised at the prevalence of American Redstarts in those woods. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend isn’t rare, difficult to see, or worthy of such a status by any other typical metric.
'Purina Pro Plan is kicking off a social donation campaign, driven by cat photos! Pro Plan wants to inspire cat owners to capture moments with their own cats, and then share what makes cats great! 'The incredible Chimney Bluffs overlooking Lake Ontario, home of abundant Bank Swallows. With all due respect to the South Americans, Africans, and Antipodeans lamenting the loss of daylight, SUMMER IS HERE! The Northern Hemisphere is basking in maximum sunlight, affording everyone more time to chase birds and whatever else people do during the day.
'Sadly, that is not the name of new reality show. (The fraction of the TV-watching public that would want to gaze at birders birding is probably pretty small. Though perhaps if the contestants wore clingy, revealing outfits and character shoes, ratings would be decent.). Rather, it’s that time again for Swarovski Optik North America’s annual digiscoping contest.
'There was a time when albatross taxonomy was quite simple. Actually, I lie, albatross taxonomy has always been a mess, but there was a period of relative calm, from the sixties to the ninties, when there were about 12 species in two genera. Then taxonomists started using DNA to look at albatrosses, and everyone knows nothing good comes from that. Suddenly there were lots of species, and most confusingly of all, never the same number or types in each book or resource you looked at.
'While we are away in the Southern Highlands trying to keep warm and enjoying the bird species of that area I will share with you some of our local Broome birds. I was quite surprised that I have not actually done a post on Double-barred Finch as they are often the first birds in our garden each morning and often the last to leave. I suppose it is quite easy to overlook a bird species that is common, but recently the numbers have increased and up to forty birds have been feasting on the seed in
