" Creature Quotes: Advancing Toward Freedom For All Species ," compiled and edited by SBH Clay, is now available. From the Introduction : "Humans are fascinated by animals. For all our devotion, though, we sometimes seem not to recognize the needs and wants of animals. We unwittingly partake of activities that hurt, physically and mentally, the very creatures we admire and seek to protect from harm (5).".

J. J. C. Smart on Ethical Progress

Animal Ethics

If there has been progress in ethics recently it has been through the realization of some ethicists that animal happiness and suffering has to be considered equally with that of human beings. I should draw attention here to the remarkable book Animal Liberation by Professor Peter Singer of Monash University. Christian ethics has been deficient in this respect, since animals have been regarded as things made by God for the use of men.

Swan Lake performed by Rascal

4 The Love Of Animals

Thanks to Barbara Barth for this guest post. Barbara wrote a memoir about her first year as a widow called The Unfaithful Widow. A good portion of the book is about the rescue dogs that grieved with her and comforted her during this time. Surprisingly, it is also a funny–no, a hilarious–story of readjusting to single life after 25 years in a relationship.

Protecting Your Pets from Pests and Disease

We would like to thank Leslie Douglas for this great guest post! A lot of very important information for pet owners, especially as we go into the summer season. We all know that mosquitoes are annoying pests that buzz around and then bite, leaving a welt that itches terribly. Mosquitoes bite humans and animals with no regard to species, and they bring along a number of illnesses.

5 things to know about pets and pests

4 The Love Of Animals

5 ways to de-bug your pet this spring: Ticks can be difficult to spot. Ticks are tiny, some about the size of a pin head. They can resemble freckles, moles or even specks of dirt. Also, they can hide behind floppy ears or in long fur. Don’t assume your dog is tick-free just because you can’t readily see one. Ticks may be transferred to humans. You may not spend much time outdoors, but if your dog does, then you can get a tick, too.

Why I Question Animal Testing 2.2

I particularly question the use of chimpanzees in medical research. From what I recall, chimpanzees share at least 95 percent of human DNA, although the number that floats around the most is 98.6 percent. The following is from The Dragons of Eden by Carl Sagan. If chimpanzees have consciousness, if they are capable of abstractions, do they not have what until now has been described as "human rights"?

Why I Question Animal Testing 2.1

Critter News

This is a continuation of an earlier post about why I question animal testing. Oftentimes, scientists seem to think that they just need to waive their PhDs and research projects in everyone's faces and we should all shut up and bow our heads to their great wisdom. But universities and scientists are not always there working for pure learning or the improvement of humanity.

The Unknown Costs of the Oil Spill

Critter News

This post on Mongabay.com discusses whether we'll ever know the full extent of the oil spill's impact on wildlife. There are many animals that are "charisma species" that capture our attention, like pelicans and turtles, but what about the animals farther down on the food chain that we don't see. They may not be cute and charismatic, but they are the ones that support those that are.

Why I Question Animal Testing 2.0

Critter News

I'm updating this rant from a few years ago regarding why I question animal testing. I'll probably do this in a series of posts because I just can't seem to sit down for long periods of time to write. I get frustrated when people accept a scientist's opinion in support of animal testing simply because that person is a scientist. I think one should try to understand that scientist's motivations.

Obama to Reopen Offshore Oil Drilling in Shallow Waters

He is going to add new safety regulations , but I don't like off-shore oil drilling AT ALL! At least BP will hopefully get nailed with lots of penalties. Although it doesn't really matter because those dead animals will never get their lives back and who knows if the habitat will ever fully recover. From the Wall Street Journal. The Obama administration, facing rising anger on the Gulf Coast over the loss of jobs and income from a drilling moratorium, said Monday that it would move quickly to re

It's all in fun, with much of the humor coming from the commentators and the special sound effects. It does get old, however, after about 10 minutes. On "The Road" and Humanity

Last night I watched 2009's " The Road " (based on the Cormac McCarthy novel , which I haven't read), a post-apocalyptic tale of a man and his son trying to survive. They're trying to get to the coast and then go south, where they think there might be more food and at least the winters won't be so brutal. Gangs of evil-doer survivors are marauding across the land, up to a particular kind of evil.
