I live in Seattle and I am always skeptical of how the UW treats its lab animals. I had never heard of the use of ferrets in medical research though. News to me. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine claims these are unnecessary procedures, even though the ferrets are apparently anesthesized during the process. Full story in the Seattle Times.
To the Editor: Mark Bittman wants to outlaw confined livestock feeding operations because, he says, they harm the environment, torture animals and make meat less safe (“ A Food Manifesto for the Future ,” column, Feb. 2). We take issue with him on all three points. Yes, there were a couple of highly publicized manure spills involving hog farms in the mid-1990s.

Today’s guest post is from Amy Silver. Amy is a Public Health student and an animal lover. She enjoys spending time with her two dogs, and suggests studying animal care for those who wish to turn their love into a career. Are you considering a career path that will let you interact with and help animals? Most of us would immediately think about entering into a program of study to become a veterinarian; however another exciting field to consider is that of a professional zoologist.
“The Fabulous Animal Rescue Project&# is a global artistic effort to raise funds and awareness to the needless suffering of animals. They gather donated art/photography from artists all over the planet and use them to create greeting cards, magnets and pocket mirrors. If you are an artist, you might want to consider donating an image to the project.

The following is a paid review for PetAmberAlert.com. When we were asked to review this site, we could not have been happier. A site that is dedicated to helping lost pets and their owners reunite? Yes please! Thankfully our pets have not been lost, so I can’t tell you first hand how well it works. However, judging by the success stories on the site, it works wonders!

I recently got the chance to read the book, 100 Heartbeats: The Race to Save Earth’s Most Endangered Species , written by Jeff Corwin. You may know Jeff from his fun and informational TV show (I know we used to watch it all the time), but he is much more than just a television show host. In this book, Corwin shares what he has learned as he travels the world to see first hand the species that are endangered. 100 Heartbeats: The Race to Save Earth’s Most Endangered Species , is titled
Here's the full article from the Weekly Times Now. ANIMAL rights groups have begun a campaign against the dairy industry's treatment of bobby calves. Australian Dairy Farmers says calves can be left unfed for 30 hours before slaughter but the RSPCA says the practice is "cruel". Animals Australia has a video on its website showing calves being roughly dragged off utes and thrown to the ground.
I don't always know how I personally feel about Pamela Anderson, but I can't argue with her (non-acting) work. Her letter to the Indian research facility is pretty distressing. Sounds like she watched a harsh video. For the full story, g o here to the Vancouver Sun. Former Baywatch star and model Pamela Anderson has accused one of India's most prestigious research centres of animal cruelty, urging it to retire decades-old test monkeys and adopt humane practices.
I'm studying for the CPA exam and am working through Becker's online course review for the business section. Here's an example of "joint costs" that says all you need to know about animals as nothing more than inputs in a manufacturing process. "The meat packing industry takes a single input, a steer, and produces many different final products. Each product must be assigned a cost including the different cuts of meat for human consumption, different food products for animal consumption (pet food

After Kyla Duffy’s first Don’t Kill Bill performance at Blogpaws in September, the Blogosphere was abuzz with videos and reviews. It entailed an aerial fabric performance (think Cirque du Soleil or that hotel commercial with the lady swinging from the drapes) set to beautiful music by animal advocate Marilyn Milano and a slide show about puppy mills and volunteering with rescues.
To the Editor: Re “ A Food Manifesto for the Future ” (column, Feb. 2): Let us give thanks for Mark Bittman! He is speaking sensibly about one of the most important issues we face as a nation. Better food creates better health. And yet our government is perversely encouraging food habits that negatively affect our health and our environment. His call for the end of factory farms (concentrated animal feeding operations) is courageous.
This is the story of the sled dogs that were cruelly executed because a Whistler company wanted to downsize. Apparently, the manager of Howling Dog Tours applied for workers comp for PTSD and this is how the whole story was revealed. It's created quite an international uproar and the murdered dogs are knows as the Whistler 100.
