Kathy Hershey: Parker, the Playground’s Vulture

10,000 Birds

Today’s blog was written by Kathy Hershey, co-founder of Utopia Wildlife Rehabilitators in Hope, Indiana. The voice on the other end of the phone was panicked. “There’s a huge bird chasin’ the kids around the trailer park! You better do something about it, or we’re gonna shoot it!”. It was happening again … Parker was back. Parker was an adult Turkey Vulture who enjoyed playing with children.

Dreaming of Africa

10,000 Birds

It’s hot outside and inside… I am drinking the WHE brew, a Belgrade beer made upon a Neolithic Turdas-Vinca culture recipe (a great brew, my only complaint: bottles are girly-small!) and dreaming of a place where the heat is moderate, beer snake-cold and birds innumerable… Let’s say, where the average annual maximum varies from 22 to 24 degrees Celsius / 72 to 75 Fahrenheit and where some 700+ bird species – 24 of them endemic – are waiting for an intrepid birder… Answer

For a Wildlife Rehabber, Joy in August is Possible

10,000 Birds

By the time August rolls around, wildlife rehabilitators are fried. There have been months of late-night phone calls, hordes of orphans, and lots of less-than-satisfying encounters with the public, who, shall we say, don’t always have the best interests of wildlife at heart. Here is a typical wildlife rehabber near the end of August: But then something amazing happens.

Lapwings, Loons & Lousy Jacks: The How and Why of Bird Names

10,000 Birds

Long ago, before I became the bird-name rancoteur I am today, I had an idle question. Why, I asked myself, did the loons come to be called loons in the English-speaking regions of North America when they were already known by the much more practical term divers back in the colonists’ mother country? As the title suggests, Lapwings, Loons & Lousy Jacks has the answer (it’s to do with the evolution of language and the fact that colloquial names come in and out of currency, but I ur

Birding the Pannonian Sea Sands

Sandy terrains are at their best during spring migration and this is the off season for such habitats. July is that boring period after the breeding and prior to migration season. Yet, somehow, this month I did three trips to those sandy areas downriver from Belgrade. But first, where did all that sand came from? I know that you believe that Serbia is a land-locked country, but Belgrade city was actually built on an island in the sea.

Wild Notes: Observations over time about birds and other fleeting things

Years ago, when I reviewed Brian Kimberling’s Snapper , I reflected a bit on the pros and cons of writing in the chatty, conversational style of the loquacious guy on the next bar stool. Given that it’s a style I myself often adopt (and sometimes fail at), it’s something I’ve thought a lot about. Pulled off properly it can be charming, funny, discursive and yet rewarding.

The Million Dollar Duck (2016) – A Film Review

10,000 Birds

As a birder, this 72 minute documentary film about the Duck Stamp Contest didn’t accomplish what I was hoping it might – get people excited about the Duck Stamp, or at least wildlife conservation. It did neither. The film began with a very brief history of the stamp, which is probably not well know by most casual observers. An explanation is given about how market hunters and the draining of wetlands left no place for migrating waterfowl to land or feed and “ the Great Plains s

The Kite Run

10,000 Birds

To say that my birding has been limited this year is an understatement. My spring and early summer were sucked away from me by the work involved in producing a new field guide to the Carolinas. That project is mostly complete now, but life has a way of stealing that time you’d rather spend birding, and the oppressively hot summer has made the prospect of standing out in the buggy wilderness staring at messy molting birds and squawking fledglings less than appealing.

Germany’s Great Bustards and how to see them

I am not entirely sure whether most birders outside Germany know or realize that Germany still has a decent population of one of Europe’s most attractive and desired bird species: the Great Bustard Otis tarda. This species, one of the heaviest birds able to fly, was once common through most of southern and central Europe and all the way to Mongolia, but was driven to extinction by hunting and changes in agricultural practises in most of its European range during the 19th and early 20th cen

In the interim, I hung around Lake Ontario watching Mallards oppressing American Black Ducks.

What is the National Bird of Panama?

Bay Bluff Park is for the Birds

With all my recent traveling up and down the eastern United States, I have had almost zero time to bird in my “home territory.” During my first full week at home in months, I vowed to change that with a visit to a new (to me) park. As one of Britain’s most abundant birds, the Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus should have made it onto my yard list much earlier than this. They are not shy and they like to sing during the spring, so missing them until now is quite an oversight on my part.
