Birding Technology – The New Citizen Science

10,000 Birds

Birding has come a long way since I was a nipper! Advances in optics, field guides, internet resources and now, apps, mean that there really is no excuse to be a horrible birder. Which is bad news for someone like me who still struggles with the fact that bats are mammals. But one of the most important aspects of these advances in new-age birding is the fact that they have grown hand-in-hand with the almost exponential growth in citizen science.

How to Identify Food Intolerances in Pets

4 The Love Of Animals

What causes food sensitivity in dogs and how can you treat it? It might surprise you to learn that according to the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association approximately 10% to %15 of dogs are prone to developing food allergies or food intolerance before they reach the age of 4. For new puppies that are under the age of 1-year, many vets will recommend probiotics, which can be purchased online via a Canadian drug store and dispensed in your pet’s food in order to establish gut bal

Happy 12th Birthday Violet Rays!

Animal Person

There she is. my girl. She has beaten the odds and made it another year. The life expectancy of greyhounds is 12-15 years. If they've raced, you subtract a year for each year of racing. Violet Rays was a very successful competitor and the offspring of a Hall of Famer, and she made someone a lot of money, winning race after race for the two years she was hauled between Oregon and South Florida.

Lawsuit to Challenge Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act

Critter News

Read the full article in the Washington Post. A group of animal rights activists sued the U.S. government Thursday to challenge the constitutionality of a rarely used law they say treats them like terrorists if they cause a loss in profits for businesses that use or sell animal products. Five activists represented by the Center for Constitutional Rights filed the lawsuit in federal court in Boston, asking that the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act be struck down as unconstitutional because it has

The Great Climate Hoax

Animal Ethics

Suppose, for the sake of argument, that the globe is warming. What follows, as a normative matter? Nothing. As David Hume (1711-1776) pointed out long ago, you can't validly deduce an evaluative proposition from a set of factual propositions. (Put differently, there has to be at least one evaluative premise in order for there to be an evaluative conclusion.

A healthy diet for healthy pets

4 The Love Of Animals

It’s no secret that a healthy diet is the path to a long and vigorous lifestyle, and that is certainly true for our pets. A nutritious diet promotes stronger bones and teeth, a sound heart, healthy coat and a happy personality for your cat, dog, or any beloved pet. We all know this, but how can you be sure that you’re providing your companion with the best possible diet for a healthy lifestyle?

On the upside, he's a mellow youngish guy (he turns four in March), he's healthy, he loves to jog a couple of miles every morning and he's great on the leash. And he's child friendly. Are You Trying to Control the King?

Sales and Marketing Management

By JOHN GOLDEN. While most sales organizations subscribe to the concept of being buyer-focused, particularly in the complex sale, it has always been accompanied by the belief that a seller can bring value to a customer at many different junctures during a sales cycle, which in turn relies on the salesperson gaining access to the buyer at these various junctures.

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: In “ Hunting Deer With My Flintlock ” (Op-Ed, Dec. 26), Seamus McGraw says he has a responsibility to kill deer because there are too many. He has volunteered to kill a deer cruelly, ineptly and with an outdated weapon that causes additional suffering to the deer. I assume that the use of the flintlock is to enhance his self-image as a master of the woodland.

When Feeding Birds Runs Amuck

10,000 Birds

Feeding birds is generally regarded as a harmless past-time, a wholesome way for people to share nature and enjoy wildlife with the family. However, more and more news stories are popping up this year of communities cracking down on bird feeding. Sometimes people find themselves the victims of ill-informed home owners associations that have a phobic view of wildlife.

In fact, quite the opposite—my personal story of owning two lovely rescue dogs for several years will make you uncomfortable. Still, it is a story worth telling, simply because there will be some of you who are in the position I was a few months ago, and even if you don’t agree with my final decision to give up on one of my dogs, my experience will hopefully open up a conversational space for multiple

The close encounter lasted for 15 minutes while the birds foraged and played in the trees showing their best sides.

Hunters Shoot Rare Ducks

10,000 Birds

The seventh occurrence of Harlequin Ducks in Utah is now over. Why? Because a hunter or hunters shot all three. They were apparently shot from the Antelope Island Causeway, where birders had been reporting them from, and, even worse, it seems that the hunters might have learned of their presence from birding listservs. This would seem to be yet another example of the interests of birders and hunters not coinciding. a.

South Africa’s endemic birds

My home country of South Africa can only be described as a birding paradise! Although in raw numbers (843 species recorded to date) it doesn’t compete with tropical countries to the north or on other continents (especially South America), South Africa makes up for this in several ways: • the highest number of endemics on the continent: 19 true endemics, 2 breeding endemics, 1 winter endemic and 45 near-endemics (having more than 70% of their range within the borders of South Africa); • two near-

I’ve seen young Red-tailed Hawk s who just don’t have the hang of it, counting on luck of good fortune to present them with a careless gopher or a rare easy meal. Patch was focused and deliberate, consistent and inventive. She ate everything from Rock Pigeons to caterpillars, earthworms to Brewer’s Blackbirds, but her staple diet consisted of plump, toothy, charismatic, and abundant Pocket Gophers.

Mountain Bluebird in New York

What is there to say, that is, other than “Wow” as you head out the door to track it down? First found on Monday by Lenore Swenson and Diane Teta while it was feeding along a fence line in Suffolk County, on eastern Long Island, the bird was found again on Tuesday, so I made a pre-work chase after it on Wednesday morning.

Patch: An Urban Red-tailed Hawk (4 of 4)

A nice thing about spending 7 months with the same bird, particularly a second year bird, is getting to watch it molt and acquire its adult plumage. Watching a bird mature is also gratifying because the majority of young birds don’t make it to their second birthday, so every adult you see is a special bird indeed. I remember noticing little red spots on Patch’s rump and closer inspection showed them to be the beginnings of her red tail.
