No, he's not a vegan. And his reasoning isn't my reasoning, but he has some great points. I caught the last few minutes of Oprah a couple of days ago, when she gave grilled KFC to the audience and apparently announced the giveaway. What I was thinking about was: Did she not watch her own show about the treatment of the animals we use as food? Did she forget that PeTA awarded her " Person of the Year " last year, largely for exposing the conditions of animal farms?

An animal cruelty investigator from Animal Cruelty Investigations and sheriff deputy were injured at a bullfight in Thornton CA. Though the bulls were supposed to be hit with velcro darts, these ones were allegedly stabbed with nails. From the Sacramento Bee: When the animal cruelty investigator attempted to grab the bandoleras, he was put in a chokehold by Darren Nunes, 24, and almost lost consciousness, according to a Sheriff's Department news release.
Enough has now been said to show that the habit of flesh-eating, involving as it does the sacrifice of vast tracts of land to the grazing of cattle, and the consequent starving of agriculture, is far too costly to be justified, in the face of an extending civilisation, unless by a much clearer proof of its necessity than any which its advocates have essayed; in fact it only remains possible, on its present large scale, through the temporary use of huge pasture-grounds in remote semi-civilised re
We got a chance to review an amazing book recently! Animal Investigators: How the World’s First Wildlife Forensics Lab Is Solving Crimes and Saving Endangered Species is an interesting read about the world’s first wildlife forensics lab. Scientists and forensics teams work together to solve murders of endangered species, and of course to help stop the poaching and smuggling of these animals.
Want to celebrate all the mothers? Not just the human kind? Then I have a show and book for you! In the Womb: Extreme Animals is premiering just in time to celebrate Mother’s day! The show airs on Sunday May 10th, 2009 at 9:00pm ET/PT. This episode takes a look at four very different animals; the Lemon Shark, Emperor Penguins, Red Kangaroos, and Parasitic Wasps.
We who want humans to stop using sentient nonhumans have few victories to celebrate. But one area that continues to provide them is the fight against the use of greyhounds as a source of entertainment (and gambling revenue) by forcing them to race. Here are a couple recent bits of good news. You may recall that Massachusetts voters let their opinions about dog racing be heard when they voted to ban racing in their state.

I've used the term "animal activism" lately as an experiment. I'm trying to gauge people's receptivity to what I'm about to say. I notice that if I use "animal rights activist" or anything with the word "rights" in it, because it's loaded and misunderstood, my listener often has an immediate bias of some kind. People have a relationship, whether or not they are aware, to the term "animal rights.
From today's Publisher's Weekly : In January, Meredith Corporation quietly launched Mixing Bowl , a social networking site about cooking. Emphasizing user-generated content, the site invites home cooks to exchange recipes, share photos, participate in contests and post messages. The site is approaching 12,000 members, which Meredith v-p and general manager Jeff Myers said is “ahead of expectations.
Through all of the damage control and message-neutralizing I have to do due to PeTA campaigns or someone lumping me with PeTA--or the HSUS, for that matter--I always remember that the real enemy of my cause is someone who wants to convince the world that there is nothing wrong with using animals when we have no need to and who profits from the "production" and slaughter of sentient nonhumans.
Uganda is seeing a growth in tourism dollars from visits to see its mountain gorillas. This is very important. The tourism revenue creates an incentive for Uganda to protect the endangered species at the same time that it contributes to human welfare. This is a kind of symbiotic relationship that only benefits both members of the relationship. Lets hope it continues to flourish.
Food, Inc. was at the Delray Beach Film Festival last weekend, about 30 miles south of me. But I wasn't. Nothing about its " Alliances " (or it's " Issues ") screams vegan, or even whispers it, but I shall reserve judgment. If more people eat actual food as a result (i.e., less processed food and more fresh, organic fruits, veggies, grains and legumes), than I'm thrilled.

This is an excellent opinion piece in the Philadelphia Inquirer. The author, an assistant professor of sociology at Tulane University, poses some important questions. While I don't agree with everything he says, I do think he makes some legitimate points. The media and society is vilifying Michael Vick (rightly I believe.) But is he relatively that much worse than the rest of us?
Image via Wikipedia I found The Goode Family disappointing on the vegan side. Yeah, lots of mockery, but I didn't laugh. I didn't think the show was all that funny, like, say, The Simpsons. The bit about the purity dance and marrying your father was okay, but still not that funny. Maybe it's me. Comedy is my favorite genre, and I enjoy satire the most.
Dogs were seized at a Kennewick puppy mill with the help of the HSUS. H/t to HelpAnimals on Twitter. From the HSUS press release: KENNEWICK, Wash. - The Humane Society of the United States assisted the Benton County Sheriff's Office today with the seizure of hundreds of dogs from a puppy mill here. Prosecutors are considering charges in connection with today's seizure against Ella Stewart, owner and operator of Sun Valley Kennel, who was recently charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty.
If men were angels, no government would be necessary. --James Madison (For all those libertarians out there, as well as anyone who believes government has no place regulating anything, including animal welfare.). Tags: quotes.
Very interesting opinion piece about how factory farms facilitate the rapid spread of viruses into the food supply. Will our desire to mass-produce cheap meat end in a health disaster? From the Independent. How much harm will we do to ourselves in the name of cheap meat? We know that bird flu developed in the world's vast poultry farms. And we know that pumping animal feed full of antibiotics in factory farms has given us a new strain of MRSA.
I guess I'm living in a cave. I didn't know that there were specific breeders out there producing animal subjects for medical research. According to this article, some are so bad that the University of California and the University of Cincinnati have actually decided to end their relationships with them and stop purchasing animals bred for research use.
Nice article about people who are committed to defending "lab rats" used for medical research. I've worked with rats and I find them charming and intelligent creatures. So I think it's sad to read this. "You see people shut down if you talk about how a rat can suffer," says Chad Sandusky, director of toxicology and research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a group that fights for animal rights and advocates vegetarianism.
May is National Foster Care Month Allow me to change topics for one day and ask you to help me help foster kids and young people who have aged out of foster care (i.e., turned 18) by supporting two organizations that are dear to my heart. I have been involved with Turtle Nest Village, which serves emancipated foster youth, for seven years; and Kids@Home, which serves youth in foster care in addition to youth who have aged out, for over two years.
That is a good rating; however, if you click on the comments tab , you'll see a spirited debate about the executive compensations. Oh, well. I'm still a member. Tags: aspca donations charities.
Just in time for the start of summer, it’s the First Annual Week for the Animals in Washington DC! (Washington, DC) Animal World USA is pleased to announce exciting news about the 1st Annual Washington DC Week for the Animals, which will kick off Saturday, May 30th and run through Sunday, June 7th, 2009. Attorney's for 4 people accused under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act filed a motion to have the charges dismissed. Among the activities the 4 are charged with are writing in chalk on a sidewalk and distributing leaflets. From the press release: “To characterize protest and speech as terrorist activities is ludicrous,” said Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) cooperating attorney Matthew Strugar.
I received an e-mail from the well-meaning Wendy at Compassion in World Farming (which I find an odd combination of words) regarding Egypt's pig cull and asking me to send my protest to the Egyptian Government. The pigs are being buried alive, dumped in mass graves and "covered in what appears to be quicklime where, they endure a slow and agonising death.
If human beings are so exceptional and the natural masters of the universe, then why did it take the demise of the dinosaurs for them to evolve? Tags: musings.
I was hoping to say that I have blogged every day for three years as of today, but sadly, and very frustratingly, the past couple of days I have been otherwise occupied. So here I am, on the third anniversary of Animal Person, asking for advice that has nothing to do with veganism or animal rights (and I've tweeted about this so some of you already know what's coming).
Vick has returned to his home in Virginia. From the AJC: He will spend the next two months being monitored at home and working a $10-an-hour job as a construction laborer. He’s scheduled to be released from federal custody on July 20, and then faces three years of supervised probation. Vick’s construction job is part of his probation, and he was to find out more about the restrictions he faces in home confinement from the probation officers, though it was not clear if those guideline were laid o
There have been so many great animal artists coming to our attention recently, and the Museum of Joe Art (MoJA ) is one of them! While we haven’t had the pleasure of seeing their work in person, we do enjoy the style and idea of custom art to honor pets. Ron and Joe are best known for their Art Parts line of humorous, high-end clip art and stock illustrations, but now they offer their new pet product: handmade, one-of-a-kind, 3D constructed art!
