Yesterday, in the comments of An Affront to the Idea of Family , Brian wrote: I understand your concern for those cows that were beat by that man and the unfortunate death of all the cows that died in the snow storm. As a dairy farmer I even had a hard time reading that. I love my cows and I don't anyone touch them in that manner. I am always working for the best environment and the most comfortable situation for my cows, who I consider part of my family.
SeaWorld animal care specialists are a little bleary-eyed this week as they provide 24-hour care for a weeks-old, baby manatee. Orphaned by her mother, the female calf arrived at the park’s rehabilitation center on July 24 after being rescued from the waters of Daytona Beach, Fla. Every three hours the 3½-foot and 41-pound orphan is bottled-fed with the park’s nutrient-rich baby formula that promotes weight gain.

To the Editor: Re “ A Hen’s Space to Roost ” (Week in Review, Aug. 15): We are glad to see an article describing the intensive confinement of egg-laying chickens, but we disagree when it says that animal advocates and consumers are “driving big changes” in the treatment of chickens. Thus far, the state ballot initiatives and agreements that will expand space for chickens (as well as for gestating pigs and veal calves) are really very minor.

Another fun toy from Think Geek! Baby sure loved the Bacon Bubble Buddy. It’s a fun toy for both dog and human. The bubbles fill a small reservoir in the blower, and then with a few pulls of the trigger, bacon flavored bubbles come out for your dog to catch. They are safe to eat, and though I didn’t try tasting one, they did smell like bacon!

Summer is ending and that means one thing: Back to School. For most people right now, images of school supplies, homework and a new fall wardrobe are dancing in parent’s heads. But there’s one thing people often forget about: the family pet. It’s not abnormal for dogs and cats to get depressed when kids leave the house to head back to school – or go off to college.

Germany has been one of Europe’s strong economies, but things are changing for everyone. It began with the saddest story, as great ideas often do. Claudia Hollm saw a TV show about a family who had to relinquish their dog because of economic hardship. The family simply did not have enough money to feed their beloved dog and with breaking hearts they relinquished him to a shelter where he died shortly thereafter of a broken heart after being so loved by this family for many years.
We have a great giveaway today for 10 lucky readers! New Lives: Stories of Rescued Dogs Helping, Healing and Giving Hope is a great new book that celebrates rescue dogs. It tells of 18 dogs who were rescued from shelters and the streets, who are now performing miracles in animal therapy and as service dogs The foreword is written by Dr. Marty Becker (Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul), and cover endorsements are from both the ASPCA and the Humane Society.

The book features short stories of animals who have touched the lives of people. Anyone who has ever loved a pet will relate to the power that animals can have on a person. But this book doesn’t just feature dogs, there are stories of all kinds of animals.
Every year, roughly 3 million lost dogs and cats end up in shelters in the United States. DoSomething.org is all about empowering young people to take action on causes they care about. Lost pets is a growing issue that teens care about. So DoSomething.org asked young people to submit ideas for reuniting pets with their owners. Thanks to our friends at the ASPCA, DoSomething.org gave 2 $500 grants to young people with the best ideas.
Ugh, this is barbaric and right out of the dark ages. From the AP. A declawed, defanged bear is chained to a stake as hunting dogs bark and snap, trying to force the bear to stand on its hind legs. The training exercise called bear baying is intended to make the bears easier to shoot in the wild and it's only allowed in South Carolina. Armed with new undercover video of four such events, the Humane Society of the United States is pressuring state officials to explicitly outlaw the practice, whic

We are into the “dog days&# of summer, and with that comes a need to keep cool. Recently we had been looking into options to help keep our upstairs room cooler, it’s the hottest room in the house, even with the air conditioner on! Of course, because we have pets (including a bird), using our ceiling fans and traditional fans worried us a lot.
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) energy healing is a gentle, painless, yet powerful modality that works on all living things – human and animal. Animals in particular are receptive to Reiki, because they have a higher energy frequency running through their bodies than humans do. Reiki helps balance animals physically, mentally and emotionally. Reiki is based on two Japanese words – Rei meaning universal consciousness and Ki meaning life energy.
In " Move to Limit 'Factor Farms' Gains Momentum " in today's New York Times , we learn that farmers in Ohio have agreed to phase out gestation crates within 15 years and veal crates by 2017. I won't get into whether I find that to be a victory. Here are the sentences that I want to bring attention to: The family of Irv Bell, 64, has been growing hogs in Zanesville, Ohio, since the 19th century.
For Spine TV’s debut full-length presentation, Bronwen Parker-Rhodes’ captivating new documentary Living With Us examines the special relationship between animals and their trainers, offering a touching glimpse at their unique and close bond. Unobtrusively shot, the film closely observes three trainers conditioning animals’ behavioral patterns with patience, skill and sensitivity.
Here's an action alert from Physicians for Social Responsibility. "Since 2001, chimpanzees have been housed at APF, where they cannot be used for research. However, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) plans to move the chimpanzees—many of them at least 30 years old—to the Southwest National Primate Research Facility in San Antonio, Texas, where they can be used in painful, invasive experiments.".
Here's an opinion piece from Ingrid Newkirk arguing to stop the transfer of 202 "retired" chimpanzees to a Texas facility where they may be subjected to more experimentation. The Governor of New Mexico has already met with the National Institutes of Health to try and stop this transfer with no apparent success. Some of the animals are 60 years old and veterans of the US space program.
Really sad. The Spoon-billed Sandpiper, one of the world's most threatened birds, is rapidly heading towards extinction because young birds are being targeted for human consumption. Spoon-billed Sandpipers nest only in the far north-east of Russia. In 2000, around 1,000 breeding pairs were known, but by 2009, the number had plummeted to just 120-220 pairs, a decline of 88%.
From the AP. Gov. Bill Richardson is asking to tour a former medical research lab in southern New Mexico that houses more than 200 chimpanzees. Richardson made the comment Tuesday after meeting in Bethesda, Md. with officials of the National Institutes of Health, which contracts with a private company to care for the chimps. The contract expires next year and Richardson opposes a plan by the agency to transfer the chimps from the Alamogordo Primate Facility, where they are no longer used for med
I recently got a chance to read a book called Scent of the Missing: Love and Partnership with a Search-and-Rescue Dog. Wow, and wow. The book is an amazing and heartfelt look at the unique partnership and bond that search and rescue dogs have with their handlers. A very interesting, touching, at times funny, and overall a great read. The book follows the story of Susannah and her dog Puzzle.
