Weatherwise around the world, this last weekend of September delivered a sneak preview of what each of us will likely enjoy or endure over the six months. We’re not fully into winter or summer yet, but the scent is in the air. Most of the birds you see these days, however, won’t be sticking around long, so take advantage while you can! On my nature rambles this weekend, I ran into a couple of White-crowned Sparrows.

Several weeks of travel have wrapped up with our visit to Guadalajara, Mexico. This town, with its adjacent municipalities has a population of over 4 million people, and is steeped in Mexican history and lore. Despite the huge population, many large parcels of land have been set aside for parks and green areas. In our visits to Guadalajara, we have always stayed in the community of Zapopan.

October may be the month of terror–particularly for those of us horrified by the pervasive spread of pumpkin spice flavoring–but the first weekend of the month can be idyllic. When people say they love fall, they usually envision early October. A slightly smaller subset of those autumnal advocates also envision all the migrants still streaming across the skies.

The Galapagos Islands? Costa Rica? How can a remote archipelago made famous for Darwin, a bunch of finches, and other cool endemic birds be related to the land of quetzals and “gallo pinto” (that would be the local version of rice and beans)? Although Cocos Island is halfway between Costa Rica and the Galapagos, we are still talking about hundreds of kilometers of ocean between us and the place of the big tortoises.

Following on from our overnight camp at Goanna Creek and not leaving too early due to enjoying the pleasure of so many birds we headed for the Caranbirini Conservation Reserve , which is about 45 kilometres/28 miles south of Borroloola. It is not far off the bitumen on a well-maintained gravel road and it is only a short walk to the Caranbirini waterhole, which remains full during the dry months and is easily accessible.

Now that fall weather has firmly taken hold over much of the northeastern United States, let’s have a real autumn beer this week. In my book, a dependable brown ale fits the bill – or beak – perfectly. Not as dark and burnt-tasting as porters and stouts, but boasting a maltier punch than paler beers, a good brown ale rewards its drinkers with rich bready and caramel flavors that are often overshadowed by hops or roasted grains in these other styles.

Obsessive. Strange. Inscrutable. Yes, birders of every stripe came out in droves (flocks?) for the American Birding Expo , held this past weekend just outside of Philadelphia. (However, I’m applying those adjectives not to my fellow bird lovers, but to the panoply of humanity that descended upon the other hall at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center for the “Walker Stalker” convention of Walking Dead fans.).
