Flock to Marion

10,000 Birds

Hannah Buschert was first exposed to birds and birding during a required ornithology course at Oregon State University and she quickly caught the birding bug. This spurred her to pursue a career in environmental education and wildlife nature tourism as a park ranger in Texas and as the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail Coordinator with Florida Fish and Wildlife.

When it Rains

10,000 Birds

Some sayings are trite for a reason, most often because they are repeated innumerable times in speech and in the day to day unfolding of events. I’ve personally used the title of this post several times and I’m certain many of you would have as well – I missed my last scheduled posting here because I had no computer, just one of several pieces of fabric to have unraveled over the last few weeks.

I f you’re on a highway and Road Runner goes beep beep. Just step aside or you might end up in a heap. Road Runner, Road Runner runs down the road all day. Raptors of Nanhui, Shanghai

10,000 Birds

Raptors are not really the main attraction of Nanhui for birders – and given how things develop here recently, soon there will be no attractions left anyway. Still, coming here often guarantees to see some of them eventually. And in my customary environmentally friendly approach to recycling bird photos, I have collected some of them in this post.

Further flooding across Roebuck Plains

10,000 Birds

Last Sunday we checked the Travel Map to see if we would be able to drive across Roebuck Plains on the Great Northern Highway to the south of Broome. There had been more rain in the past week and the area has a huge catchment, so we knew it was highly likely the water across the highway may be quite deep. It had been two weeks since we had driven across the plains and the water level was higher.

On the Lake with American White Pelicans

10,000 Birds

I’ve made some new friends in 2022. For the past few years, they’ve been mere acquaintances, passing through North Florida on their way to who knows where. I’d spot them from the distance along the coast or swirling high overhead, their bright plumage glinting in the sunshine. But now, they’ve decided to become full-time winter residents, resting along the shoreline, fishing in the shallows, swimming past me day in and day out.

St Peter’s Brewery – Cream Stout

10,000 Birds

I know. I’m a day late and it’s the wrong saint ( forgive me, Father, for I have sinned ). While I’d love to provide a beverage recommendation for Saint Patrick’s Day each and every year here at Birds and Booze, the fact of the matter is that there’s only so much bird-related Irish booze to be had out there. And after showcasing the famous (but rather obvious) Guinness toucans one year and getting a bit more obscure (and distinctly more pious) with an I rish whisky that features the Saint Kevin
