Raptors are not really the main attraction of Nanhui for birders – and given how things develop here recently, soon there will be no attractions left anyway. Last Sunday we checked the Travel Map to see if we would be able to drive across Roebuck Plains on the Great Northern Highway to the south of Broome. There had been more rain in the past week and the area has a huge catchment, so we knew it was highly likely the water across the highway may be quite deep. It had been two weeks since we had driven across the plains and the water level was higher.
I’ve made some new friends in 2022. For the past few years, they’ve been mere acquaintances, passing through North Florida on their way to who knows where. I’d spot them from the distance along the coast or swirling high overhead, their bright plumage glinting in the sunshine. But now, they’ve decided to become full-time winter residents, resting along the shoreline, fishing in the shallows, swimming past me day in and day out.
