Secrets of the Swamps

10,000 Birds

Some days ago I had the opportunity to explore the grossly underbirded southeastern corner of Trinidad. I wrote about the Trinity Hills last year – the only remaining stand of virgin lowland forest on the island.

Birding Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo: Coastal Birds

10,000 Birds

In my last post , I introduced the Mexican tourist center of Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, and talked about some birds seen along a bicycle path that heads uphill from Ixtapa’s hotel zone. The bicycle path supposedly leads to a beach named Playa Linda (Lovely Beach), but the route turned out to be too long for me to walk to, round-trip, in the tropical heat, so I returned to

Gantheaume Point after a big tide

10,000 Birds

Last Sunday, April 9th, the tide in Broome was one of the highest of the year and peaked at 9.99m at 12.20pm. When we get these very big tides we don’t go to the coast until the ocean starts to recede and then the shorebirds are more relaxed. As the big tides push up the shorebirds have to keep moving and they are unsettled, but once the tide turns they are more relaxed.

Birding Tongli Wetland Park

10,000 Birds

Tongli is an ancient water town in Jiangsu province about one hour away from Shanghai by car (see here for some photos of the city). Its minor claim to fame among the water towns around Shanghai is its sex museum – a bit of a rarity in traditionally prudish China. However, for birders not exclusively interested in Japanese T**s, the nearby Tongli National Wetland Park is definitely more relevant.
